Oswego State women’s basketball mid-season update

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Women’s basketball team is off to a historic start to their season, and the best under head Coach Sean Pinkerton. With nine wins so far this season, they passed the most wins in a single season by Pinkerton, which was seven in the 2017-18 season, in their December 3 win over the Buffalo State Bengals. So far they are 3-2 in the SUNYAC, putting them in sixth place so far, but still have 13 games still to play in the league.

The Lakers have been led by transfer Karleigh Leo this season. The Liverpool, N.Y. native transferred in this season from Stevenson University and has made a major impact. She has played in 10 of 11 games so far this season, starting all ten. She leads the team with 16.3 points per game, and is also averaging 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists. She is third in all of D3 in three pointers attempted and fourth in three pointers made. She is second in three pointers per game.

Three other Lakers are scoring more than 10 points per game. Diamond Pickett is second on the team with 13.4 points per game, Logan Castiglione is third with 11.8 per game, and Shania Iglesias is the fourth with 11.4 per game. Pickett, in her second season, is also averaging 12 rebounds per game. Her six double-doubles this season have her in a 11-way for 12th most in the country.

As previously mentioned, the squad is 9-2 this season. They started the year on a seven game win streak that brought them through non-conference play and into their first SUNYAC game. The win streak included a win in the Max Ziel Women’s basketball tournament. They play two games before the new year, an exhibition with Colgate on December 17, and a non-conference game with Alfred State on December 30. Less than a week after New Years they restart conference play. They start January 6 first with Buffalo State at home, a matchup they won 73-66 in Buffalo earlier this season. Then Geneseo comes to town on January 7. The Lakers continue their season, trying to make the SUNYAC playoff for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Lakers Fall Short Against Bears

POTSDAM, NY- The Lakers fell short to the Potsdam Bears 64-54 in Potsdam on Saturday in a game where the Lakers took the lead early but were unable to capitalize in the second half.

The first quarter started off the way the Lakers wanted to draw it up as both Logan Castiglione and Shania Iglesias connected on three-pointers to give the Lakers a 6-2 lead with 8:11 in the first quarter. Castiglione would lead the Lakers at the end of the first quarter with eight points including two three-pointers. The Lakers would shoot from over 50% in the field in the first. The Lakers would lead 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started with the Bears going on a 9-0 run to take an 18-17 lead over the Lakers. The Lakers struggled from the field only shooting from 25% in the quarter. Shania Iglesias led the Lakers with nine points at the half. The Lakers barely edged out the Bears at the half leading 26-24.

The second half started with Karleigh Leo making a layup to give the Lakers a 28-24 lead early in the third. After a missed three-pointer by Diamond Pickett, the Bears went on a 6-0 run that included a three-pointer as they took a 35-29 with 3:57 left in the third. The Bears managed to shoot at 57.14% from the field in third compared to Oswego’s 40%. The Bears would knock down three three-pointers in the third as they led the Lakers 43-39 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lakers managed to cut the lead to two with two Diamond Pickett free-throws. Karleigh Leo would hit the Lakers only three-pointer of the second half to cut the Potsdam lead to two at 48-46. The Lakers were unable to rally to tie the game or take the lead as the Bears maintained their lead throughout the rest of the fourth quarter. The Bears would knock down three more three-pointers in the fourth quarter as they would score six total three-pointers in the second half. The Bears would go on to win 64-54.

The Lakers will face off in Plattsburgh against the Cardinals on Sunday, December 11th at Memorial Hall. The Cardinals are coming off an embarrassing blowout to Cortland 70-39.

Women’s Basketball Get Back in the Win Column

BUFFALO, NY – The Lakers after losing their first game of the season yesterday got back in the win column taking down Buffalo State 73-66. The Lakers didn’t trail at once during the game.

The Lakers started out the game on a hot streak as they made three straight three-pointers to lead 9-6 where Buffalo State would also hit two three-pointers in a row as well. Karleigh Leo would hit two of those three-pointers with the other from Logan Castiglione. The Lakers hit four three-pointers in total in the first quarter with the fourth coming from Shania Iglesias. Oswego would shoot 44.4% from the field compared to the Bengals 35.00%. The Lakers would lead 26-18 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lakers momentum only continued in the second quarter where they would lead 41-30 at the half. The Lakers managed to put up a respectable 41.2% from the field and 42.9% from the three-point range. The Lakers managed to add two more three-pointers in the second quarter as Logan Castiglione hit her second of the game and Peyton Daeffler made her first three-pointer of the season.

Diamond Pickett scored the first points of the second half to extend the Lakers lead to 13. Castiglione would add her third three-pointer of the game to extend the Lakers lead to 46-32 with 7:49 left in the third quarter. The Lakers struggled from the field in the quarter as they shot 18.18% in the third. The Lakers led 54-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Oswego men’s basketball split the week with SUNYAC opponents

OSWEGO, NY.  – The Oswego State Men’s Basketball team returned home for their first SUNYAC matchup of the season on Tuesday evening .The Lakers opened up their conference play against the Fredonia Blue Devils. The Lakers got off to a hot start offensively, hitting 3 of their first 5 three point shots. After the first ten minutes of play, the Lakers were 7/10 from the three point line and played great defensively holding Fredonia to only 17% from the field. Oswego would take a  lead by 27 before the Blue Devils started to make their own run to cut their lead back down to 21. At half,Oswego would have a 46-25 lead in help from a combination of great defense and even better offense. The Lakers shot 50% from behind the arc and overall 47.4% from the fieldOswego was able to win on the glass in the half, out rebounding the Blue Devils with a 22-16 margin. The Lakers played great team basketball as they spread the ball around, resulting in ten different players recording at least one field goal in the half.

Jeremiah Sparks started the second half with a flash when he started with a steal and a dunk in transition. The very next play Sparks stole the ball again and got another two points on the fastbreak just seconds later. The Blue Devils played better offensively in second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit handed to them by the Lakers.  A dunk in transition by Cartier Bowman with 7 minutes left was the exclamation point stopping the Fredonia run and Oswego was able to hit several three-point attempts late in the second half to close out the 79-60 victory.

Cartier Bowman had a great game recording a double-double with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks. The Lakers ended the game 4-1 and 1-0 in the SUNYAC.

The Lakers returned back to the Max Ziel on Friday in a tough SUNYAC matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles. The game started with a low scoring affair as no team could get the momentum going. Oswego trailed Brockport 13-7 just over 10 minutes into the contest, but went on a 10-0 run to take a 17-13 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. The Golden Eagles went on a little run of their own the last 5 minutes and the Lakers now trailed 28-25 at half.

The second half started with both teams swapping the lead back and forth. Oswego started knocking down half of their shots going 50% from the field. Brockport then came back with a a sixpoint lead with only six minutes left and coming out of a Laker timeout Jamal Achille hit a layup helping the struggling offensive lakers cut the deficit to four. That layup with be the last score for either team until about 90 seconds remaining in the game when Brockport kept growing their lead. On the Oswego side Devin Green ended the game with 11 points. The Lakers struggled all game shooting 25.7% from the field, and 18.5% from three point range. The Lakers did have more offensive rebounds recording 16 to Brockport’s 10.

The Lakers move to 4-2(1-1) overall and have their first lost in the SUNYAC with a record of 1-1.The men now travel to Buffalo to face the Buffalo State Bengals on December 3, and look to get back in the win column against a team that has lost two games in a row.

Golden Eagles Hand Lakers First Loss of the Season

OSWEGO, NY- The Lakers played a tough-fought game against the Brockport Golden Eagles but unfortunately fell short 75-60. The first quarter was a defensive battle where the Lakers were able to force missed shots from the Golden Eagles. The Lakers also missed plenty of layups and shots during the first quarter as well. Karleigh Leo would lead the Lakers in points after one quarter with five points. The score was tied at 12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lakers finally were able to get into a rhythm in the second quarter. Karleigh Leo and Logan Castiglione both hit three-pointers to give the Lakers an 18-17 lead with almost halfway through the second quarter. The Lakers defense played stout in the second quarter as they forced the Golden Eagles to miss five consecutive three-point attempts in the quarter. Brockport was able to gain some momentum late in the quarter when they were able to hit a three-pointer and a couple of free-throws to give them a 32-27 lead over the Lakers at the half. Leo would lead the Lakers with eight points at the half followed by Shania Iglesias with seven.

Brockport would continue to put pressure on the Lakers in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles would go on a 12-point run before Oswego was able to cut the lead to four 43-39. The Golden Eagles would then go on a seven-point run to take a 50-39 lead with 2:08 remaining in the third. Oswego struggled from the field as they went 23.33% from the field but shot perfect from the free-throw line.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Lakers trailed 50-43 but were unable to cut into the Golden Eagles lead. The Lakers would allow Stephanie Jean-Baptiste to hit three straight three-pointers to extend the Golden Eagles lead to 64-27 with 4:27. The Lakers managed to cut the Eagles lead to ten but gave up five points as they fell to the Golden Eagles 75-60. Karleigh Leo would lead the Lakers with 19 points on the night, hitting three three-pointers with Logan Castiglione scoring 17 points on the night.

The Lakers will travel to Buffalo State to take on the Bengals at 2 PM at The Sports Arena. Buffalo State is coming off a 61-46 loss to Geneseo where they currently sit a 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers haven’t won against Buffalo State since the 2019-20 season.

Oswego womens hockey goes 1-1 on the weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. – It was a week of ups and downs for Laker women’s hockey this weekend as they had some success and some troubles. The Lakers took on the Buff State Bengals Friday in a game that was an absolute massacre from start to finish. The Bengals have been really struggling this season with only three wins to their name. The Lakers were happy to add another loss to their record with a whopping 9-2 victory. It was the Mack Hull, Simone Bednarik, and Ashlyn Mcgrath show as they all got a piece of the pie with multiple goals on the day. Mack Hull had three goals on the day, two in the first period and one early on in the second to set her team up for success. Bednarik would score the first goal of the game and from there the Lakers completely dominated the rest of the contest. The Bengals were able to score two goals throughout the game but it was nowhere close enough to get the job done. The Lakers would look to keep the momentum rolling as they headed into a big home game against the Plattsburgh Cardinals the following day.

The Lakers did not have the same success they had the day before as they fell to the Cardinals in a hard fought battle until the very end. Plattsburgh got on the board fourteen minutes into the first to put them in the driving seat. The Lakers were far from out of the game however as Ashlyn Mcgrath would score her 10th goal of the season to tie up the came in the second period. Mcgrath has been on an absolute tear this season as she has been dominating for the Lakers in every game. Plattsburgh would break the tie in the third and despite the valiant effort, would suffer a 2-3 loss in a close fought battle. The Lakers are now 8-4 and will play at home against Amherst College January 3rd at 5:00pm.

Men’s Hockey lose two amidst tough stretch

UTICA, NY – The #7 ranked Oswego State Men’s hockey team has hit a rough patch in their season, losing their last three games. After losing to Skidmore two weekends ago in the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational, their Lakers returned to home ice Friday night to take on the Morrisville Mustangs on Teddy Bear Toss night.

Morrisville took the early lead in the game. In the fourth minute of game action, the Mustangs put one past net-minder Cal Schell for the first goal of the game. It look less than ten seconds for Morrisville to double their lead, and the Lakers found themselves with an uphill climb to get back and win the game. Despite being down, the Lakers led the period in shots, 9-7, three of them coming by way of Tommy Cahill. Schell ended the period with five saves. The Lakers dominated the face-off circle winning 13 of 15 opportunities.

The Lakers started their fight back in the second period. It started slow, a penalty by Ryan Dickinson at the five minute mark put the Mustangs on the man advantage, but the Lakers killed it, allowing no shots. Just past the half way mark Trent Grimshaw scored, sending the teddy bears flying onto the ice. All the stuffed animals collected were donated to Toys for Tots. The goal was assisted by Ryan Dickinson and Tommy Cahill. Neither team would score the rest of the period. Oswego again led in shots, 8-6, and was led by Cahill and Colabufo with two each. Schell had another six saves.

The third period saw Morrisville have two penalties, first a tripping call seven minutes in, and then their second too many players on the ice call of the game in the seventeenth minute. The Lakers couldn’t capitalize on either penalty only getting one shot off in the first and none in the second. They finished 0-3 on the Powerplay in the game. Oswego pulled goalie Cal Schell in the final minutes of the game, and the Mustangs used that to their advantage, scoring the empty netter with just 1:30 remaining the contest. Morrisville handed the Lakers their first conference loss of the season, and their second loss in a row. Cahill and Colabufo led the team in shots with five each. The Lakers were dominate all game in the face-off circle going an outstanding 25 for 30. Schell had another 11 saves in the final frame, finishing the game with 22.

Oswego took to the road on Saturday night to take on the Utica Pioneers for a matchup of two top 10 teams. The Pioneers came into the ga e ranked #3 in the country and looked to hold their status and one of the best programs in division three. It also happened to be teddy bear toss night in Utica. The Lakers held the game scoreless for a good portion of the first period, but the Pioneers finally got one by Schell. The Pioneers commanded the first period, winning the shot battle 17-5. Schell, back in net, had 16 saves.

The Pioneers took over the in the second frame. Nine minutes in the they scored their second of the game. Two minutes later they scored their third. They scored their fourth with less than two remaining in the period. The Lakers took a couple penalties in the period, but were able to kill them, despite going down 4-0. Lakers were again outshot, 15-8, in the period. Schell had another 12 saves.

The Lakers played their most competitive in the third. They were still out-shot 13-10, but that was the closest it was all game. Neither side scored in the period, but it was a very physical one. The squads had dueling penalties just before the fifteen minute mark, but for the Lakers it resulted in a five minute major and game misconduct for Matt McQuade. The sides again had competing penalties with 3:30 to go. Despite everything that happened in the period, Schell finished off an overall good night with another 13 saves, finishing the game with 41 saves. Alex DiCarlo and Connor Sleeth led the Lakers in shots with three each.

With the losing streak, the Lakers fall to 7-4 on the season and 5-1 in the SUNYAC. They have one more weekend of games before they get a couple weeks off. Next weekend they take to the road for a game against the Buffalo State Bengals on Friday and stay on the road for a game against Fredonia on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 7:00 P.M. for both games. The are currently #7 in the USCHO poll, but expect to fall with the losses.

Women’s Basketball Takes Down Blue Devils, Roll to 7-0

OSWEGO, NY- The Lakers extended their winning streak to seven after defeating the Fredonia Blue Devils 76-66. Throughout most of the game, it was a back-and-forth battle between the Blue Devils and the Lakers before the Lakers pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Diamond Pickett got the Lakers on the board first.  A minute later Karleigh Leo would add her first three-pointer of the game to make the score 5-0. Leo led the Lakers with ten points in the first quarter followed by Diamond Pickett with four. The Lakers started out the second quarter with a three-pointer from Chastin Giles who was pretty active in scoring for the Lakers against the Blue Devils. The Lakers led 22-15 at the beginning of the second quarter before squandering six straight points to the Blue Devils only leading by one 22-21. Fredonia rallied with three minutes left in the half to take the lead 30-28 as Kyla Smith scored all five points for the Blue Devils during that run.

The third quarter saw the Lakers take the momentum away from the Blue Devils but were outshot by the Blue Devils 64.4% compared to the Laker’s 42.2%. Leo would help the Lakers retake the lead with another three-pointer to give them a 36-34 lead with 7:35 left in the third. Leo led the Lakers at the end of the third quarter with 13 points followed by Diamond Pickett with 12 and Iglesias with nine. The Lakers led 56-53 at the end of the third.

The Lakers started out the fourth quarter with both Logan Castiglione and Chastin Giles hitting back-to-back three’s to extend the Lakers lead to 8. Karleigh Leo hit a three-pointer with 4:31 left to extend the Lakers lead to ten 69-59. This forced the Blue Devils to burn one of their timeouts. The Blue Devils would commit six fouls in the final two minutes of the game which included Renee Park who was disqualified from the game after her fifth foul of the game. The Lakers made five free throws to extend the score 76-66 to win the game. Karleigh Leo once again led the Lakers in scoring with 23 points as she is averaging 19.5 points/per game. Leo is currently #1 in D3 Women’s Basketball in three-pointers made with 28, three-point attempts with 73, and three-pointers per game with 4.67. Diamond Pickett had another stellar performance with 16 points along with Shania Iglesias with 14 points.  Chastin Giles played impressively as well with ten points on the day.

The Lakers will be back in the Max Ziel Gymnasium on Friday, December 2nd to take on the Brockport Golden Eagles at 5:30 PM. The Lakers are searching for their first 8-0 start since the 2004-05 season where they finished that season 24-4. The Lakers are looking to defeat Brockport for the first time since the 2019-20 season when they defeated them 69-62 in Brockport. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 71-63 win over Buffalo State improving their record to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in the SUNYAC.

Women’s Basketball Keep Winning Streak Rolling at 6-0

OSWEGO, NY- Once again the Women’s Basketball team keeps their winning streak rolling at 6-0. The Lakers defeated Alfred University 65-57 on Tuesday. The 6-0 start is their best start to a season since the 2004-05 season where they started an impressive 11-0.

Karleigh Leo had a strong first quarter with two three-pointers as the Lakers led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers had outplayed the Saxons as they had shopt 40% from the field while Alred has shot 31% from the field. The Lakers also out-rebounded the Saxons as well. The second quarter played out exactly like the first. The Lakers outscored the the Saxons 15-14 with Karleigh Leo’s two three-pointers in the second quarter. Leo led the Lakers in points at the end of one half after hitting four three-pointers.

The Lakers strugglled in the third quarter only shooting from 30.77% from the field. The Saxons managed to hit back-to-back three-pointers in a span of two minutes to draw within one of Oswego’s lead at 40-39. Alfred managed to tie the score at 43 at the end of the third quarter.

Logan Castiglione scored the first four points of the game for the Lakers in the beginning of the fourth quarter. Shania Iglesias hit a three-pointer to extend the Lakers lead to 50-46 with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter. Karleigh Leo then added her fifth three-pointer of the game with 6:11 to extend the Lakers lead to 53-49. Iglesias had scored two layups that helped the Lakers extend their lead once again that the Lakers wouldn’t look back from. Diamond Pickett, Elaina Johnson, and Karleigh Leo would add the final points for the Lakers to make the score 65-57.

The Lakers will host Fredonia on November 29th at 5:30 at the Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Lakers are looking to end their eight-game losing streak against the Blue Devils as their last win against came in 2016 where they edged them out by a point 62-63. The Lakers look to keep their winning streak alive at 7-0.

Women’s Basketball Flatten Wells Express

OSWEGO, NY- The Lakers put an absolute beat down on Wells College 88-20 on Wednesday night. Oswego managed to score a season-high in points this season in a game which was the most they have scored in a single game since the 2017-2018 season where they scored 91 against Cazenovia.

The Lakers led by 16 at the end of the first quarter as Julia Logana, Logan Nyemcheck, and Claire Skowronski led the Lakers with 4 points scored in the quarter. The Lakers shot 12-20 from the field goal line compared to Wells who only managed to shoot 2-18.

In the second quarter, the Lakers shot 8-23 from the FG line and shot 34.8%. Oswego went 40% from the three-point line. The Lakers defense swarmed the Express only giving up four baskets during the second quarter. The Lakers by a huge margin at half 45-8.

The Lakers would struggle in the second half as they shot 39.1% in the third quarter but they maintained the huge lead they had over Wells. Wells would score more points in the third quarter than in the last two quarters but they still trailed by a large margin as the Lakers defense continued to give them problems. Jenna Russo scored five points in the third quarter as she had a career day recording 14 points to go along with ten rebounds and three assists.

The lakers got things back together in the fourth as they shot from 50.0% and went 9-18 from the three-point line. Giovanna White-Principio and Russo would both have ten rebounds on the night. Caitie Lilly would score 13 points on the night and the Lakers would have 12 different players who scored in the game.

The Lakers travel down south to face Suny Delhi on Novembver 19th at 1:00 pm at the Floyd L. Maines Arena. They face a Mustangs squad who is 1-2 this season coming off a crushing loss to Utica 89-30. The Lakers lone game against Delhi resulted in a Laker blowout 75-39. The Lakers are searching for their first 5-0 start in 12 years.

Men’s basketball gets non-conference win on the road

POTSDAM, NY.  – The Oswego state men’s basketball team travelled west to take on the Clarkson Golden Knights on Tuesday evening.The Lakers got off to a very fast start taking a 14-2 lead with the help from senior Devin Green who started off hot going 4 for 4 on 3pt attempts. Clarkson found themselves in offensive trouble early turning the ball over 3 times in the first 3 minutes of play trying to figure out the Oswego defense. But the Lakers cooled off a little at the end of the first half and Clarkson took advantage cutting their deficit to just 5 points going into halftime. Altogether in the first half, Oswego shot over 52% from the field and were on fire from beyond the arc converting on 70% of their 3pt attempts.

Oswego got their groove back to start the second half converting on almost 54% of their field goal attempts and getting a dominating 94-69 win on the road. Altogether the Lakers shot over 53% on the night while also shooting 50% on their 3pt attempts. Leading the way for the Lakers was Devin Green who finished with 23 points along with 6 assists on the night. The Lakers dominated the paint throughout the game , earning 58 of their 94 points in the paint. Newcomer Cartier Bowman led the Lakers on the glass, securing 11 rebounds for Oswego.

Oswego now moves to (3-0, 0-0 SUNYAC) while remaining at number 5 in the d3 rankings. The Men will head to Rochester on Tuesday, November 22nd to take on Nazareth College at 7pm in a revenge game for the Lakers who lost to the Golden Flyers last 67-65 at home last year.

Pickett Seals Lakers 2022 Max Ziel Tournament Win

OSWEGO, NY – Women’s Basketball continues to impress early on in the 2022-23 season as they won the 2022 Max Ziel Tournament and stay undefeated at 3-0. The Lakers got the tournament started by taking down the Keystone College Giants 86-84 in OT.

The first quarter was competitive as there were eight lead changes in the quarter. The Lakers went 3-8 from the field goal line in the first quarter and would outscore the Giants 19-11 in rebounds. The second quarter saw three more lead changes as both teams would score 17 points in the quarter as the score was tied at 35 going into the half. In the third quarter, there were eight more lead changes as the game continued to be a back-and-forth battle between the Lakers and the Giants.

The Lakers would lead 62-28 going into the fourth quarter but Keystone began to pull away in the fourth. Karleigh Leo helped rally the Lakers back as she had ten points in the final four minutes of the fourth to bring the game to overtime at 77. In overtime, both teams went back-and-forth until Diamond Pickett grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with 1.8 seconds left in overtime. A last-second three-point attempt by Keystone’s Riley Berry failed as the Lakers won 86-84 in OT. Leo would lead the Lakers on the day with 23 points while Pickett had scored 14 points. Despite the losing effort, Berry had 33 points in the game with a total of 58 throughout the whole entire tournament including going 13-25 from the three-point line. She was able to earn herself an All-Tournament Player award for her team for the tournament.

In the second game, the Lakers rode the momentum they had against Keystone into their game against the Suny Poly Wildcats winning 65-64. The Wildcats came off a day one win in the tournament against Morrisville defeating them 63-55.

The Lakers started off the game with back-to-back three-pointers from Karleigh Leo and Logan Castiglione to put the Lakers up 6-2 early in the first quarter. The Wildcats were able to maintain a three-point lead going into the second quarter but the Lakers would go on a 13-point run to lead 27-17. Poly would rally back though and would cut the deficit to four. The Lakers would lead 33-29 going into halftime.

Karleigh Leo would go off in the third quarter with four three-pointers as the Wildcats had no answers for her. The Lakers would begin to pull away from the Wildcats 59-48 at the end of the third. The Wildcats would rally back in the fourth despite both teams struggling offensively. Diamond Pickett proved to be the difference maker once again as she scored the game-winning basket with nine seconds remaining. Logan Castiglione would win the All-Tournament Player award for Oswego as she had 19 points to go along with 11 field goals made in both games.  Karleigh Leo would win the MVP for the tournament after her incredible performance in both games where she recorded 40 points along with going 15-37 from the field-goal line.

The Lakers will stay home to face Wells College on Wednesday, November 16th at the Max Ziel Gymnasium at 7 PM. The Lakers will look to stay undefeated this season as they look for their first four 4-0 start since the 2010-11 season. Additionally, they will be looking for their first four-game win streak since the 2012-13 season.

Men’s basketball captures big milestone in route to winning tip off tournament

WILLIMANTIC, CT.  – The Oswego state men’s basketball team has continued their success from last year with a big tournament win this past weekend The Lakers traveled to Eastern Connecticut for the Tip-Off Tournament on Friday where they first faced the Hobart statesman. Oswego started the game by establishing a 6 point lead late in the first half of play with the help of their solid defensive performance. Hobart would then go on a run and erase the lead, eventually getting a three point lead of their own with 2:42 in the first half. Oswego was not be able to erase the deficit in a very low scoring half and allowed Hobart to hold a 30-25 lead going into halftime.

Oswego would come out alot stronger in the second half and put on an impressive offensive performance. The Lakers would erase a nine-point second half deficit and turn it into a their highest lead of the game by 16 points,. The Lakers ended up winning 65-53 to win game one of their weekend. Oswego would shoot 50% from the field in the second half, converting 17 of 34 field goal attempts and shot 40% from 3pt range, hitting 6 of 15 3-pt field goal attempts. Ahkee Anderson lead the way for the Lakers by scoring 15 points and overall shooting 50% from the field. Jeremiah Sparks led the team in rebounds with 8 and brought the Lakers to the championship Saturday.

 The Lakers team faced Eastern Connecticut State Warriors in a back and forth matchup for the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Oswego would come out on fire in the first half shooting lights out with an outstanding 46.4% (13/28) on field goal attempts. But the Lakers couldn’t get the 3pt shots to fall shooting only 20% (2/10) from beyond the arc. The Lakers played some tough defense on the Warriors holding them to only 28.6% on their field goal attempts in the first. Oswego  then established a 16 point lead late in the first. However, the Warriors would rally and end the half on a 11-0 run, hitting three consecutive 3-pt shots. Oswego went into halftime leading 32-27 going into halftime. Jamal Achille led the Lakers with 9 points in the first half.  New Laker Cartier Bowman lead Oswego on the glass with 7 rebounds and Devin Green and Ahkee Anderson would each add 2 assists going on half.

  The Warriors defense in the second half would give them the advantage in the half, causing many Oswego turnovers to start. Oswego would then go ahead and  build another double-digit lead early in the half, and the Warriors would go on another 11 point run to give them a 46-45 lead. Despite their struggles offensively early, Oswego would then hit several clutch free throws late to help push them over the Warriors. Oswego would win the tournament in a 60-50 victory over the Warriors. Ahkee Anderson lead the Lakers with 21 points,3 assists and 2 steals. Jeremiah Sparks recorded his first  double-double of the season scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Three Oswego players made the all tournament team with Ahkee Anderson, Jeremiah Sparks and Cartier Bowman making the team. With this win on Saturday, Coach Jason Leone also becomes the winningest coach in Oswego State Basketball History passing Kevin Broderick who coached the Lakers from 1996 until 2009 with a 209-150 record. Leone now stands at the very top of the record book with a 210-78 record in his twelfth year as the Lakers’ Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

Men’s hockey wins first SUNYAC away matchup

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers took a trip down I-81 to Cortland Friday for their first road conference game. A matchup between a ninth ranked Lakers squad and a Red Dragons that were receiving votes to get into the top 15 in the USCHO poll certainly had implications for the rest of the season.

The Lakers were the first to find the scoreboard. A little over eight minutes into the period, Tommy Cahill put one past the goalie. It was Cahill‘s third goal of the season. Assist went to Ryan Bunka. Cortland would answer back before the end of the period though. An unassisted goal with just over five to play tied the game. The Lakers had two power play opportunities towards the end of the first, but wouldn’t capitalize on either during the first period. Oswego outshot Cortland 15-9 in the period, Daniel Colabufo leading the team with four shots. Cal Schell, back in goal for his third start of the season, had eight saves.

The second period was all Lakers. The second goal of the game for Oswego came just 40 seconds in. Still on the power play left over from the first, Alex DiCarlo scored his second of the season. Assists went to Tommy Cahill and Daniel Colabufo. It took less than two minutes for the Lakers to double their lead. Thomas Rocco would score his fourth of the season, assisted by Connor Sleeth, his sixth. Goal four was again a quick fire, just 40 seconds later. Jackson Arcan scored his second, assisted by Alex DiCarlo. Once more, it took less than a minute for Oswego to score their fifth and final goal. Tommy Cahill netted his second of the game, Trent Grimshaw getting his third assist of the season. The Red Dragon’s starting goalie, Luca Durante was pulled after the fifth Lakers goal. Cortland wanted in on the scoring parade, adding one of their own, and their second of the game, just 40 seconds after the Lakers fifth. In total, five goals were scored within the first 4:10 of the second period. No other goals were scored in the second. Oswego again won the shot battle in the second 17-7. Schell only had six saves in the period.

Cortland fought in the third period to try and win or get to OT. It took until less then five to play in the game for them to score their third goal.
Then, with under a minute to play, they scored a fourth making it 5-4, but it was too late, as the Lakers held onto their lead. The squads tied in shots in the final period 11-11, but the Lakers won the overall battle 43-27. Thomas Rocco  and Tommy Cahill led the team in shots with six each. Connor Sleeth was 12-15 on the face-off in the game. Cal Schell had 23 saves in the game to go with the four goals allowed.

The Lakers are no 4-1 this season and 3-0 in the SUNYAC. Their next matchup is a big one as they head to the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena in Geneseo, N.Y. for a ranked matchup with the Geneseo Ice Knights. The Knights are currently ranked #3, though they may fall after a tie with Plattsburgh Saturday night. They come home for a game with Brockport on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball victorious in opening game

HAMBURG, NY – Women’s basketball got their first win of the season in Buffalo in their opening game of the season taking down Hilbert College 78-63 on Tuesday night. The Lakers started off the first quarter strong by scoring 23 points compared to the Hawks nine. Both Shania Iglesias and transfer student Karleigh Leo scored the first two three-pointers of the season for the Lakers. Both Logan Castiglione and Diamond Pickett were active in the first quarter as Castiglione had 3 assists and Pickett had six rebounds. Leo in her first game as a Laker had scored nine points in the first quarter.

The Lakers never slowed down as they continued to hold onto the lead in the second quarter. The Lakers got back-to-back steals from Pickett towards the end of the first half as they led to points by Shania Iglesias and then Pickett was able to add to her points total for the game. The Lakers were able to get 30 rebounds in the first half compared to only 17 for the Hawks and had 20 points in the paint. The Lakers led 35-30 going into halftime.

The Lakers defense continued to give the Hawks problems in the second half. The Lakers led 57-44 going into the final quarter. They were able to get their biggest lead of the game in the third quarter, leading 62-44. The Hawks couldn’t find any answers to the Lakers who dominated in almost every aspect of the game and on the stat sheet as well. Pickett had a great game for the Lakers as she scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds along with shooting 70% from the field. Leo made a name for herself on the court as she led the Lakers on the night with 20 points.

The Lakers will host their first game of the season on Friday, November 11th at 7:30 PM at the Max Ziel Gymnasium against the Keystone Giants. The Lakers will take on a Keystone squad for the first time in their program history where they face a team who went 18-8 last season and made it to the CSAC Championships before losing. Keystone fell to Wilkes on Tuesday night 76-52.

Womens hockey gets first win this weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – It was an entertaining weekend for women’s hockey as the Lakers were able to pick up a win this weekend despite suffering a loss the night prior. The Lakers headed to Potsdam this past Friday to take on the Bears in what was a big matchup for them. Despite a close game the Lakers just weren’t able to get the job done in a 2-1 loss. It was a stalemate in the first period as both teams remained scoreless at the buzzer. The second period is where things got out of hands for the Lakers as Potsdam was able to put two goals on the board and the Lakers just did not have an answer. Looking to rally in the third sophomore Ashlyn McGrath scored a goal capitalizing on an early third period power-play. The Lakers could not crawl out of the Bears trap they set up in the second as they left Potsdam with a one goal loss. Despite this loss the Lakers bounced back the following day.

Saturdays contest ended with a much better result for the Lakers as they took home a big SUNYAC win and their first win of the season against Canton on the road. This game was a great way for the Lakers to get back on track heading into some big upcoming games. They took the lead late in the first thanks to a goal by Myah Booth in the first period. The Lakers traded goals with Canton in the second Avery Webster responded back to a Canton goal off the assists from Rheya Zemlak and  Ashlyn McGrath. The Lakers would just pour it on in the third when McGrath tallied another goal on the weekend. McGrath had a phenomenal two games for the Lakers. In the Last two minutes of the third period Kyleigh Grugin put the Nail in the coffin scoring the fourth and final goal for Oswego. The Lakers look to keep this momentum rolling as they take on Morrisville College this Friday, November 11th at 4:00 PM on the road!

Red Dragons put Dagger in Lakers Playoff Run

CORTLAND, NY- The Lakers season ended Wednesday as they fell to the #1 seeded Cortland Red Dragons 2-0 in double overtime.

The first half of the game was mostly a defensive battle as both teams were pretty even. Oswego’s defense kept Cortland’s high-scoring offense in check throughout the whole entire first half. The Lakers were able to get seven shots during the first half while the Red Dragons had six. Lexie Thompson, Graisa Madden, and Lugina Serrao led the Lakers with four shots on the day. Perri Anderson would record two saves in the first half.

Oswego would record eight more shots in the second half of play compared to Cortland’s nine. The Red Dragons came into this game only allowing about eight shots per game but in Wednesday’s game Oswego got the best of them recording 17 shots.  Anderson would only face one shot in the second half where she recorded her third save of the day. The Lakers recorded four shots on goal during the first half but they were unable to capitalize off them and score. Oswego all game long posed a challenge to Cortland as Cortland failed to score in both the first and second half. The Red Dragons had an uncharacteritstic 24 fouls on the day compared to Oswego’s ten fouls.

The first overtime period was all Cortland as they recorded two shots while the Lakers didn’t record any shots. Anderson would record her fourth save of the day in the first overtime period. Cortland was able to pull away in the second overtime period as they were able to control the Lakers offensive attack. The Lakers got their first chance to score in the second overtime period but a shot by Katie DelGrosso hit the crossbar. The Red Dragons finally broke the scoring drought as Simone Neivel scored at the 5:40 mark of the second overtime period.  Oswego was unable to tie the game after Cortland scored the first goal of the game. The Red Dragons would deliver the final blow to the Lakers as Liz Allen would score the second and final goal of the game with six seconds remaining in the game.

The Lakers finish the 2022 season at 9-6-4 which is their best record since the 2013 season where they went 10-7. The Red Dragons will move on to the SUNYAC Championships where they will face the Geneseo Golden Knights who are coming off a 3-2 win against New Paltz.

Lakers volleyball loses in SUNYAC championships

GENESEO, N.Y.  –  Oswego state volleyball team faced off against the Geneseo Knights on Tuesday afternoon for the first round of the SUNYAC Championships. The Lakers started off strong building a 3-1 lead over the knights. Both teams would go back and throughout the first half of the set. Geneseo would then take control later in the first set, increasing their lead to 7 over the Lakers.Oswego had many mistakes in the first half with 12 errors in the first set, 4 of which came from service errors. The Lakers had no answer and couldn’t get the lead back from the Knights as they took set 1 by a score of 25-17.

Geneseo continued to control the second set, establishing a 10-3 lead on the Lakers before a timeout by Oswego. The Lakers rallied back and cut the deficit to just 3 to the score 18-15. Oswego had no answers again falling in the second set by a score of 18-25. Emma Fiorentine led the Lakers with 4 kills in the second set and Mckenna Corbin added 7 more assists in set 2.

Oswego started off the third set stronger building a 5-0 lead on the Knights. The Knights would find their groove eventually and would come back and take the third set by a score of 25-20. In the set Fiorentine led the Lakers with 11 kills on the evening and Mckennaled with 29 assists and 14 digs. The Lakers were ultimately swept 3-0, ending their run for a SUNYAC Championship and their season.

Oswego State ends their season (17-11, 5-5 SUNYAC) and  Geneseo will move on to the second round of the SUNYAC championships(12-11, 7-3 SUNYAC).

Men’s Hockey splits high ranked opening weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers men’s hockey team took to both road and home ice this weekend for the first official games of their season. The weekend started with a Friday night trip to Geneva, NY to take on the Hobart Statesmen, followed by a Saturday night matchup in the Deb against the Elmira Soaring Eagles. The opening weekend was a real test for the Lakers as both squads they faced were ranked higher than them in the uscho preseason poll, Hobart #5 and Elmira #9.

The game started off pretty even for both the Lakers and the Statesmen as they each would get shots off on each others goalies. An early Hobart penalty gave the Lakers their first real opportunity for a goal all season, but the Statesmen killed it and only allowed a single shot on the net during the two minutes. Not even a minute later, Conor Smart would be called for hooking giving Hobart their first chance of the season and they would capitalize. Halfway through the penalty Hobart would score giving them the 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the contest. Oswego would be called for another penalty with eight minutes left, but net-minder Eric Green would save two shots and keep the Statesmen from extending their lead. Green finished the period with six saves.

Hobart came out of the gates swinging in the second half, getting four shots off in the first minute of play. It was Oswego who scored first in the period though. A Connor Sleeth face-off win would go back to Ryan Dickinson who passed the puck to Quinn Warmuth who buried the puck in the back of the net from the blue line. It was a very chippy period for both teams, each receiving three penalties, at one point, there was only a 3v3 on the ice. The Statesmen recovered from the 3v3 first and actually got themselves back to full strength 5v3, where they would score twice. The second period ended 3-1 Statesmen. Green had another 14 saves in the period.

It only took 11 seconds for Hobart to extend their lead in the final period, winning the opening face-off and quickly moving down ice to make it 4-1. The Lakers would hold them off for a while in the third, but with just under six minutes left the Statesmen struck again, extending it to 5-1. Oswego would pull one back on the power-play. Tommy Cahill scored, assisted by Matt McQuade. Hobart out-shot the Lakers in the contest 59-43 and dominated on the powerplay, scoring on 3-4 chances. Eric Green had 32 saves in the game. Connor Sleeth led the Lakers in shots with six and was 17-29 in the face-off circle.

The Lakers were back in the Deborah. F. Stanley ice arena Saturday night for their official home opener and the Teal Night Game. The Teal Night game for both the men’s and women’s teams raises awareness for Ovarian Cancer and takes donations for Ovarian Research in memory of the late Mary Gosek. For more information you go can to http://peacefulremediesoswego.com The Lakers were wearing their teal jerseys for the game against Elmira. The first goal of the game was in favor of the Lakers. A pass from Connor Sleeth back to the blue line to Shane Bull, usually a forward but was filling in on defense for the game, buried one past the goalie just before the half way mark in the first period. A little more than two minutes later the Soaring Eagles were called for holding and went a man down. With the Lakers on the power play, Matt McQuade brought the puck up the right side passed it off to Connor Sleeth who put it over the goalies shoulder for the Lakers second goal of the game. The Lakers put 22 shots on net in the first period.

The Lakers came out soaring in the second period, scoring 19 seconds in. Daniel Colabufo shooting one across his body and across the goal to give Oswego a 3-0 lead. Tommy Cahill got the assist. It was again the Lakers adding to their lead, halfway through the second frame. Coming off a face-off win by Ben Addison went back to Shane Bull. Bull passed it to Tommy Cahill who sent it pass the goalie. A penalty with five minutes to go gave Elmira their first scoring opportunity, and they took advantage of it. On a two-man advantage, they put on past goalie Richie Parent, who got the start in net. The Lakers had five players with two points by the end of the period.

In the final frame, the Lakers kept pushing the pace and scored again just under four minutes in. Tommy Cahill shot it low off the goalies blocker on a two-on-two opportunity and Daniel Colabufo took the rebound and scored for his second of the game. Another Lakers penalty allowed the Soaring Eagles to score the final goal of the game. Again with a two-man advantage, they put one past Parent for their second goal of the game and the final one of the game. Colabufo led the team with two goals, three different Lakers were credited with two goals. Seven different Lakers had two points. Richie Parent had 15 saves on the game. Elmira was two for three on the Powerplay during the game.  This was the Lakers first point against a ranked opponent since February, 2019 when they tied a then ranked #2 Geneseo.

Oswego is now 1-1 this season. They jumped up to #10 in the uscho poll after the weekend. They have a big weekend ahead, opening SUNYAC play with Whiteout weekend. They take on Plattsburgh on Friday, puck drop set for 7:00, WTOP10 will have a hour long pregame show, going live at 6:00 P.M. The Potsdam Bears come to town on Saturday, puck drop set for 7:00 P.M.

Lakers Advance to Second Round of SUNYAC Tournament

OSWEGO, NY – The Women’s Soccer team put on an impressive performance against the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Saturday in an upset win 1-0 in overtime to advance to the second round of the SUNYAC Tournament.

The first half of the game was a defensive battle between both teams. Oswego was only able to get one shot which came from Brianna Winkler. Plattsburgh managed to get five shots off during the first half with Perri Anderson recording one save. Plattsburgh had recorded five shots during the first half with two coming from both Nicole Kingsley and Kirsten Villemaire. Villemaire would finish the day with a game-leading five shots for the Cardinals.

In the second half, the Cardinals had 14 shots and Oswego would record eight. Lugina Serrao would lead the Lakers on the day with three shots. The Lakers would finish with ten shots with six being shots on goal while Plattsburgh had ten shots with five being shots on goal. Anderson in the second half would record three more saves as she finished the day with four saves. The game would go into overtime at 0-0 where in the early stages of overtime no one could score. Plattsburgh missed a chance to end the game on a 1:1 opportunity as Anderson made an incredible save to prevent a Cardinals win. The Lakers were able to capitalize off a corner kick that Graisa Madden was able to get into the net as Amber McDermott made a huge assist for the Lakers to secure a 1-0 overtime win against the Cardinals.

The Lakers will travel to Cortland on Wednesday, November 2 at Fred T. Holloway Field at 1 PM to face off against the Red Dragons in the second round of the SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers will be looking to make up for their loss against Cortland earlier this season. They will be looking for their first win against Cortland since the 2018 season. This marks the second time in seven years that the Lakers have made it to the second round of the SUNYAC Tournament dating back to 2015 when they lost to Oneonta 2-1.

Lakers field hockey wins season finale

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – The Oswego state field hockey team won their regular season finale over Morrisville on the Laker turf Wednesday. Oswego started out the contest strong offensively starting with a Kacie Simzer goal just over 2 minutes into the contest. The Lakers would receive several penalty corners following the goal in the first quarter. Oswego kept their foot on the gas through the rest of the first and had 7 shots in the first half compared to the mustangs 0. Kacie Simzer would quickly strike again for the Lakers, just over 2 minutes into the second quarter assisted by Megan Delaney. Oswego was able to keep the pressure on with several penalty corners. That  eventually led to another goal at the 28 minute mark from Kacie Simzer who would get a hat trick on the day, recording her third goal of the afternoon with an assist from Kate Mcnally. Following another corner for the Lakers, Kate Mcnally was able to get one of her own scoring the fourth goal for the Lakers right before the end of the first half. The Lakers closed out the first half with a dominant performance, getting 20 shots off against the Mustangs. Oswego had 13 corners in the first half of play which allowed Oswego to hold a 4-0 lead at the half.

   Oswego would continue their high scoring affair through the start of the third quarter, adding another goa just 4 minutes into play  by Kaitlyn Ahle assisted by Nancy Pagliaroli. The Lakers controlled the third quarter continuing to allow no opportunities for the Mustangs. Kaitlyn Mastracco was able to get in on the action and she scored the sixth goal on the day for the Lakers, scoring just over 3 minutes into the fourth quarter. Kacie Simzer would continue her great day recording her fourth goal of the afternoon with just under 10 minutes remaining in play. Simzer tied her career high for goals, and also tied the school record yet again. Oswego would finish the contest allowing 0 shots against Erica Scheblein and attempting 34 shots on offense.

The Lakers finished off their season with an 8-8 record, and also recorded their first SUNYAC win, giving them a 1-5 conference record on the year. Heather Moore finishes her final game as the Lakers coach with a win in a position she held for 6 seasons

Oswego women’s soccer secures SUNYAC playoff spot

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.  – The Oswego State Women’s Soccer team faced off against the New Paltz Hawks on Saturday afternoon. This game was an important one for the Lakers as they were looking to get into one of the last SUNYAC playoff spots. Oswego would take control to start the first half of the matchup in what was a relatively quiet half of play. That was until Amber Mcdermott Scored first for the Lakers, unassisted at the 29:02 mark to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The Lakers held the advantage in the first half beating New Paltz in shots 5-2 and would take a 1-0 lead after one half of play.

In the second half we saw a momentum switch where New Paltz took over. Shortly into the second half, New Paltz would tie the match at 1 from a goal by Gaby Treble at the 48:56 mark. The Hawks would eventually take the lead over the Lakers halfway through the second half from Addison Weiner at the 69:10 mark to take a 2-1 lead over the Lakers. But the Lakers fought back to tie it as graduate transfer Graisa Madde would score the match’s final point, tying the game at 2 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest. Both teams could get nothing past the goalkeepers for the rest of the game and it would end in a 2-2 tie in Oswego’s last regular season game.

The Lakers finished their season with a record of 8-5-4, and a conference record of 3-3-3. The Lakers will now turn their focus to the playoffs as they will be the fifth seed. Oswego will take on the Plattsburgh Cardinals at Plattsburgh on October 29th at 1PM in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs.

Oswego women’s hockey falls to Nazareth

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – It was a tough exhibition matchup for the Lakers as they went head to head against a very good Golden Flyers team. Nazareth is coming off an incredible season last year finishing with a 27-2-0 overall record and sweeping their conference 20-0. Despite the Golden Flyers losing a whopping thirteen seniors after last season they were still able to get the job done in the Deb. The Lakers had a rough start of the game not getting much going against a face paced Nazareth team. Nazareth opened up with a goal by Ivy Liden halfway through the first period. Heading into the second it was like night and day as the Lakers performed much better, tying it up with Nazareth with a goal from Megan Gates off of an assist by former Golden Flyer Taylor Hudon and Mia Conboy. Nazareth however answered right back with a goal by Ally Watrous to go up 2-1 heading into the third. The Lakers were not able to string a comeback as Ally Watrous would tack on another goal for the day to seal the Golden Flyers victory. The Lakers finish 0-2 in their exhibition matchups as they head into their first game of the season against Adrian College this Friday in the Deb Stanley Arena. Catch it live on WTOP10 at 7:00pm!

Red Dragons Spoil Laker’s Senior Night

OSWEGO, N.Y – The Lakers suffered a tough loss at home during Senior Day as they fell to the Oneonta Red Dragons 1-0. This was the first time the Lakers lost at home this season.

The first half of the game was a defensive battle between the two teams. The first shot of the game would come from Emily Applegate but her shot was blocked by Oneonta’s defense. Immediately after Applegate’s shot was blocked, Lugina Serrao attempted a shot but her shot was blocked as well. Amber McDermott then attempted to shoot the missed shot by Serrao but she would miss. The Lakers recorded four shots during the first half but none were shots on goal.

In the second half, both teams started off slow. There would be 21 throw-ins in just the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Red Dragons would get their first shot in the second half at the 77-minute mark. Oswego would get their first chance to score around the 82-minute mark as Amber McDermott’s shot would be missed high into the air. Oneonta would score the only goal of the game as Gianna Gritzmacher would score the goal for Red Dragons as she was assisted by Tara Nicholson. Both Oneonta and Oswego would record a total of 5 saves during the game. Goalie Perri Anderson would record only one save during the game.

The Lakers face the Fredonia Blue Devils on October 19th at 3 PM at University Stadium. The Lakers are looking to get back in the win column as they have two games remaining this season both of them being SUNYAC matchups.

Men’s Hockey opens preseason with win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team took to home ice for the first time since they beat SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC semi-final last season. A preseason matchup against the Stevenson Mustangs was an opportunity for both teams to get their legs underneath them before they start regular season play in two weeks time.

The first period saw senior Eric Green get the start in goal for the Lakers. Both sides would get shots off on net, but it would be the Mustangs who struck first in the game. Liam McCanney would send one five hole and into the back of the net for the first goal of the season with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Lakers would quickly answer though. A pass from Quinn Warmuth toward the slot, would be deflected in by Tyler Flack for the Lakers first goal with just over nine to go in the period.

The second period was a goalie battle. The Lakers would switch goalies, junior Richie Parent becoming the Lakers net minder in the second period. Parent made a few excellent saves, and showed off his stick handling abilities as a goalie. Stevenson made their goalie change halfway through the second period. All three goalies that played in the period didn’t allow a goal, and the sides went into the second intermission still tied at one.

In the third period, the Lakers gave their third goalie on the roster, new freshman recruit Cal Schell, his first opportunity wearing the green in gold on the ice. Just as Richie Parent had in the second period, he didn’t allow the Mustangs to get one past him, but the Lakers got themselves the lead. Their second goal came less than three minutes in. Coming off a faceoff, a pass went back to Quinn Warmuth in also the same spot as last time by the blue line. He again threw it into the slot, and the puck would go off the skate of Conor Smart and into the back of the net. Oswego’s final goal would come late in the third. Just as Stevenson was pulling their goalie to have a 6-5 and try and tie the game, the Lakers would have a two-on-one opportunity. New transfer Thomas Rocco would pass the puck behind the lone defender to Tyler Flack who just tapped it into the empty net for the game sealing third and final goal.

The Lakers walked away with a victory 3-1 showing good promise before the challenging season ahead. They will play one final preseason game before the start of regular season play. A matchup with Carelton Place of the CCHL on Saturday October, 22 in the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena.
