Men’s Soccer fights for draw in SUNYAC opener

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Men’s soccer team took to the Laker Turf Saturday afternoon to open their conference schedule. The Fredonia Blue Devils travelled east to take on the Lakers. Action on the field started fast, in just the fourth minute a header off a Blue Devils corner kick got past Oswego keeper Matt D’Arpino to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead. Only thirty seconds after the goal, the Lakers made their chances of winning that much harder. Liam Rothar would pick up a red card and drop Oswego down to 10 men for the next 85 minutes of game action. In the seventeenth minute Oswego’s Kyle Genrich single handedly brought the game to a tie. He would steal a pass between two defenders and be one on one with the goalie. He would place it in the bottom left corner, even though Fredonia’s goalie got finger tips on it, and the game would be tied at one. From then until the end of the half the the action slowed down a lot, and the team’s went to the half tied. 

The second half of the game was much like the second half of the the first half, as lot of possession in the mid-field and back and forth, but no real chances on goal. A yellow card for Fredonia in the 61st minute drew the ire of the crowd who wanted the refs to give a straight red as they had earlier in the game. In the final ten minutes of the game, the teams started to pick up the pace once more. With seven to go in the game, Kyle Gehrich put one on goal from outside the 18 yard box, forcing a save from the keeper. From then on it was all Fredonia. They would keep the ball on the Oswego defensive half for the final six minutes. The Blue Devils got off six shots on four corner kicks but the defense held strong, and D’Arpino had a few key saves to keep the game tied at one. Gehrich was Oswego’s leading shot taker on the day with three, all being on goal. Matt D’Arpino would finish the day with three saves.

Both team’s would walk away with a single point for the standings, as under the new point system in the SUNYAC, a draw gives each team a point, a win gives three points, and a loss gives none. The point system only applies to SUNYAC matchups. The Lakers are now 2-3-1 (0-0-1 SUNYAC). The Lakers next matchup is against SUNY Brockport on Wednesday September 21 at 4:00 P.M. in Brockport.

Women’s soccer goes third straight game without win

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s soccer team travelled to Clinton, N.Y. to take on Hamilton college on Tuesday. Even though the Lakers took the first shot the Continentals held most of the possession. As the clock ticked into the thirteenth minute, the Continentals scored the first goal of the game. Hamilton only kept going from there, having 15 straight shots to finish out the half, but non found the back of the net.

Just six minutes into the half, Hamilton struck again, doubling their lead. In the 60th minute, Oswego started pressuring Hamilton. Chances in the 61st and 63rd minute wouldn’t find home. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Continentals struck twice in succession, in the 68th and 71st minutes. The Lakers would pull one back late in the contest, Briana Winkler scored in the 81st minute, assisted by Gabriella Martinez. The game ended with a score 4-1. Hamilton completely outshot Oswego 37-8, also winning shots on goal 14-8. Oswego Goalkeeper Perri Anderson had 10 saves in the game.

The Lakers fall to 3-2-1 on the season, after starting 3-0-0. Their next game is on Saturday September, 17 against Clarkson University at the Laker Turf Stadium.

Men’s soccer bounces back with win

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s soccer team travelled south to take on the Ithaca College Bombers on Sunday. The Lakers hadn’t beat Ithaca since 1996 and they knew they wanted to change that. 

The Bombers were the ones to get off to the hot start. An early yellow card for Ithaca, in just the sixth minute, gave the bombers some momentum. They put the ball past Oswego goalie Matt D’Arpino just over a minute later. Luckily for the Lakers they turned it around real quick. Oswego’s Ha Joon Lee found the back of the net just three minutes later to tie the game. The pace of the game slowed from there. The next goal came in the 33rd minute. Kieran Gilroy for the Lakers scored his second goal of the season to put the Lakers up. Oswego didn’t stop there though, with Anastasios Diacovasilis scoring just before the half to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. The second half didn’t see nearly as much action as the first. An early yellow card for Ithaca, and a few shots for each side were the only real action. Oswego beat Ithaca for the first time in 26 years. Although the Lakers were outshot in the game 16-9, they they had more quality shots, with 6 of their shots being on goal to only two of Ithaca’s. Ha Joon Lee led the Lakers in shots and shots on goal with three each.

Oswego is now 2-2 on the season with only one game left before SUNYAC play. Their next game is their home opener on Tuesday September 13th against Elmira College at 6:00 at Laker Turf Stadium.

Lakers field hockey keep shutout streak alive with another successful weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego state field hockey team kept their hot streak going as they took their fifth straight victory beating their record of four straight last year via shutout in two home games this past weekend. The lakers started off the weekend by hosting the Keuka Wolves on friday afternoon. Senior Kaitlyn Mastracco stayed with the theme of the lakers quick offensive attacks when she netted the first goal only a minute into the game. The Lakers then stayed quiet for most of the first half as the Wolves and Lakers had a continued back and forth midfield play with great defense on both sides. It took until the 24:56 mark of the quarter until Mastracco fired her second goal of the contest past the goalkeeper putting the Lakers up 3-0 at halftime. But the Lakers turned it up after halftime after Nancy Pagliaroli scored her second goal of the season ten minutes into the second half. Less than three minutes later Mastracco struck again for her third goal of contest on a day where she ended with a team leading 3 goals and 1 assist. Senior Kacie Simzer would then score two straight goals for the lakers to end a 7-0 win against Keuka.

The Lakers came back on Saturday afternoon against Sage college from Albany, NY. The Lakers started off quick as Kaitlyn Jordan scored the Lakers’ first goal 2 minutes into the game. The Lakers had eight straight shots and four penalty corners without a score because of stellar goalie play by Sage’s Anna Church in a game where she had 19 saves, the Lakers broke through on their ninth consecutive shot off the stick of Kacie Simzer. But this team shined with their stellar defense in a game where Sage had no SOG and limited possession. Pagliaroli, Mastracco and Bauer led the team with 2 goals each and Simzer and Jordan added the others in a 7-0 win over Sage.

Oswego State will now travel to La Plume, PA to take on the Keystone College Giants on September 13 at 4:00PM.

Men’s Soccer shutout by Hamilton College

The Oswego State Men’s Soccer team lost to the Hamilton Continentals 2-0. Kyle Hanner and Kieran Gilroy both had three shots on goal each and the Lakers defense held it’s own for most of the game. The Lakers and Continentals had exchanged many shots with Oswego having six and Hamilton with five in the first half. Gilroy was the leader for the Lakers in the first half as he had three shots on goal but was unable to score a goal.

As the game went into the second half, the Lakers defense once held its own for a while. Hamilton was able to take advantage of Oswego as the Continentals had out-shot the Lakers 12-6 in the second half which proved to be the difference maker in the game. The Continentals would break the scoring drought as they scored their first goal of the game in the 63:22 mark of the game. Three minutes later, the Continentals would score their second goal of the game. Kyle Tanner  and Kieran Gilroy led the team in shots with three a piece. Oswego Goalkeeper Matt D’Arpino had three saves in the game while also allowing the two goals.

The Lakers are now 1-2 on the season. They will travel south to Ithaca to take on the Blue Bombers on Sunday, September 11th at the Carp Wood Field.

Women’s Soccer dominant in 1-0 win

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — The Oswego State Women’s soccer team took to the road on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with the Houghton University Highlanders. The Lakers completely dominated the first half of the game. They got their first shot of the half at the just after the ninth minute of the first half and didn’t let up from there. They fired off five more shots before the thirtieth minute, three of them requiring saves from the Houghton keeper. The fifth of those shots found the back of the net. A cross off the foot of Amber McDermott found the head of Maggie Riordan for the only goal of the game, Riordan’s first of the season. McDermott became the eight different Oswego player to record an assist in only three games for the team. In total the Lakers ended up getting 10 shots off in the first half to Houghton’s one. They also had six corner kicks too Houghton’s none. The Highlander’s had a few chances early in the second half, including one in the 66th minute that required the only save of the day by Oswego goalie Perri Anderson. Both teams fought hard for a goal in the second half but the defenses prevailed for a scoreless second half. Maggie Riordan led the team in shots and shots on goal, five and four respectively. Sophomore Perri Anderson started in goal for the third time this season, this time playing the entire ninety minutes, after only playing one half of each of the previous two games. 

The Lakers are now 3-0. They are yet to allow a goal this season. This is the first time since 2013 they have won three straight shutout games. The Lakers will head to Dunkirk, N.Y. on Friday to start the Fredonia tournament. They will take on the Ithica Bombers at 1:00 P.M.

Men’s soccer goes splits in D.C. tournament

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State men’s soccer team travelled down to Washington D.C. for a tournament over the weekend. The first game was their first challenge of the season, taking on #23 ranked Montclair State from Montclair, NJ. The Redhawks found the scoreboard first, a header from a corner kick just before the ten minute mark in the game. Three minutes later Montclair got a penalty kick, but a big save by goalkeeper Matt D’Arpino kept the game at 1-0. Three shots toward the end of the half by the Lakers wouldn’t find the back of the net and both sides headed to the half. D’Arpino recorded four saves in the first half, and Kyle Gehnrich led the team with four shots. The Lakers continued to fire shots on the Montclair goal in the second half, six in total, but none found netting, and the game ended 1-0. A total of five yellow cards were given out during the game, two for the Lakers and three for the Redhawks, as well as a whooping 24 fouls, 17 of them called on Montclair. D’Arpino finished the contest with six saves. Chris Smith led the team in shots on goal with two. 

Game two was played on Sunday against Baruch College from New York City. A much better offensive outing for the Lakers. Just a minute into the contest Kyle Gehnrich found the back on the net for the Lakers first goal of the season. With 24 minutes to go in the half, a cross from Chris Smith found the head of Jason Wuytack got pass the goalie for the second goal of the game and Wuytack‘s first career goal. The Lakers third goal came at the 31:26 mark. The Lakers held the ball for three straight minutes prior to the goal, Kieran Gilroy tapping it in after a save. Oswego dominated the first half in shots 14-4. Ten minutes into the second half, Baruch pulled one back, heading in a cross. Just one minute later, the Lakers brought the deficit back to three, Kyle Gehnrich passed it into Chris Smith who won a one on one with the goalie bringing the score up to 4-1, the final score of the game. Oswego dominated the game, winning 23-7 in shots and 8-1 in corner kicks. Baruch players got the only two yellow cards on the game. Gehnrich and Smith each had two goal contributions in the game.

Oswego is now 1-1 on the season, with three games left before they open SUNYAC play. The Lakers next game comes against Hamilton college in Clinton, NY on Wednesday, September 7 at 4:30 P.M.

Lakers field hockey gets two big wins in home opener

OSWEGO N.Y. — The Oswego State Field Hockey team got off to a blazing start this weekend at they took care of both opponents this weekend in a handily manner. The Lakers team first took on Medaille college in the season opener on Friday night and wasted no time to score. Just 32 seconds in the game Senior Kacie Simzer scored the first of her two goals for the first Laker goal of the season which started an all out offensive attack by the Lakers. Senior Kaitlyn Ahle had a stellar day by leading the lakers in scoring with 3 goals and 8 points which ties the single game record for total points in Oswego history. Senior Megan Delaney and sophomore Kate McNally also chipped in with two goals of their own in the first half while Delaney earned herself multiple spots in the record books, tying the single game assists record and is now tied for seventh all time for points in a single game with seven. Ellie Kazel and Nancy Pagliaroli both added one goal in a 11-0 route of Medaille. 

The Lakers kept the momentum going the next day as they shutout Houghton university 5-0 Saturday afternoon. The Lakers would get off to a slower start than Friday as Megan Delaney had the only lakers goal in the first half at the 6:35 mark. The Highlanders applied pressure to senior goalkeeper Erica Scheblein at the end of the second quarter, but Scheblein denied the chances, tallying four saves in a row to end the half making it a 1-0 lead for the Lakers at halftime. The Lakers picked it up eight minutes into the second half as they took a 2-0 lead after Delaney set up teammate Molly Darcy for her first goal of the season. Newcomer Taylin Bauer stopped a 19 minute dry spell on both sides by scoring her first collegiate goal at the 42:30 mark while 4 minutes later Kaitlyn Ahle kept her hot start up by scoring her fourth goal of the season. Kaitlyn Mastracco added one more late as the Lakers win their first two games of the season to bring them to 2-0. The Lakers will try to stay undefeated at they challenge Keuka college on Friday, September 9th at 4pm.

Oswego State men’s hockey hosts semifinals of SUNYAC Championship

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The SUNYAC Championship for men’s hockey kicked off this past Saturday with two quarterfinal games, one in Cortland and the other up in North Country. Oswego State received a bye to semifinals round due to their performance in the regular season. The Lakers are the two seed in the bracket this season and after Saturday’s results, Oswego State will host SUNY Cortland to decide who will fight for the conference championship.

2021-22 Season Recap:

At the end of the regular season, the Lakers finished with an overall record of 17-6-1 and a SUNYAC conference record of 12-3-1 which was good for second in the conference standings. While in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena, Oswego State is 8-3-0 on home ice. The group started off 0-2 after two losses opening weekend against two nationally ranked nonconference opponents, Hobart College and Elmira College. The Lakers would go one a streak after that contest only dropping games against nationally ranked opponents like SUNY Geneseo and Augsburg University.

The team’s offense has been through senior captain Travis Broughman who was recently named to All-SUNYAC First Team due to his performance in the regular season. The Laker forward finished with thirteen goals and sixteen assists totaling to twenty nine points in only twenty four regular season games. Alex DiCarlo finished right behind his captain as was the only other Oswego State player that was above a point per game. The junior finished with thirteen goals and twelve assists for twenty five points.

Newcomers Connor Sleeth, Tyler Flack, and Tommy Cahill have been bright spots in the lineup after breaking out their first season in the green and gold uniform. The three combined for a total of forty eight points this season. Shane Bull also totaled twelve points in his first season in NCAA Division III men’s hockey.

On the defensive side of the puck, senior netminder Steven Kozikoski was named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team due to his performances in the regular season while in between the pipes for Oswego State. The Liverpool native logged over one thousand minutes of ice time and posted statistics like a 2.00 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. Backup goaltender Eric Green played in eight contests for the Lakers and finished with a 2.15 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.

SUNYAC Playoffs Preview:

Wednesday evening, SUNY Brockport will travel to SUNY Geneseo to face off against the number one seed and nationally ranked Ice Knights in a semifinal contest. Brockport defeated Plattsburgh State in overtime by a score line of 6-5. If Geneseo can get the job against the Golden Eagles, the Geneseo Ice Knights will host the Championship game once again in the IRA.

In terms of Oswego State hockey, the Lakers take on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons for the 96th time in program history. This season, Oswego State defeated Cortland both times in the regular season, securing six points against the Red Dragons. Oswego State holds the history in their favor with a record against SUNY Cortland of 82-11-2 all time. Their first contest dates back to the 1976-77 season when Oswego State defeated SUNY Cortland by a score of 6-2 on home ice.

The matchup in the Marano Campus Center should feature an offensive team against some solid goaltending out of SUNY Cortland. The Lakers score on average 3.5 times per game while opponents can only net an average of 2.1 against Oswego State. In terms of Cortland, the Red Dragons score an average of 3.3 goals per game.

WTOP-10’s 5K Run

WTOP-10 will be hosting a Walk/Run in Boots for the Red, White, and Blue for Warrior Weekend at SUNY Oswego. Warrior Weekend will be held May 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.  The 5K will take place on Sunday May 4th at 10am in front of Hewitt Union. Early Registration will be from April 21st-28th from 9am to 4pm in the Campus Center.

The event will be $5. You can also sign up for the entire weekends event. $5 for 1 event, $8 for 2 events and $10 for the entire weekend. T-shirts will be given to the first group of participants who sign up but will be available for purchase the day of the event. If you can’t register early come on race day and we can get you signed up and ready to Walk/Run the 5K! There will be an opening ceremony as well as drinks, refreshments, raffles, music, and prizes for the winners.  All proceeds will benefit Clear Path for Veterans. Come wear your Red, White, and Blue and support our Veterans!
