University Police Helps Students Safely Clear Residence Halls

By: Tomas Rodriguez

As the pandemic forced students to leave their residence halls coinciding with spring break, approximately 2,500 returned to campus in order to either check-out or retrieve personal belongings. They were allowed to do so stretching between May 8 and the 18.

University Police, along with Facilities and Residence Life and Housing outlined a plan that would help students move out safely by breaking down timeframes. The days were divided into two time slots –9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The number of students on campus averaged 250 per day.

Students had to choose from various options, which Residence Life and Housing then had to approve.

“We take the same precautions that we have since mid-March, including wearing face coverings when in close contact with other persons and disinfecting our patrol vehicles and equipment regularly,” University Police Interim Chief Kevin Velzy said. “As far as a college policy, we will continue to follow the guidelines of the CDC, and our government leaders.”

If the university was to outline a social distancing and face covering policy, students who did not comply would face disciplinary consequences.

“This is an interesting time for the entire world. We are all learning day by day how to adjust and move forward with caution based on the data we have, the research that is going on, and making the best decisions we can for the good of all,” Velzy said. “We hope that everyone, especially our students, are having a safe and productive summer, and we hope to have everyone back on campus as soon as practicable.”

An official statement from President Stanley as to what the final decision for the Fall will look like is expected to come in the following weeks.

SUNY Oswego updates students on new guidelines due to COVID-19

[et_pb_section][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text]

BY: TOMAS RODRIGUEZ

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SUNY Oswego will be transitioning all summer courses to distance learning, with some facing possible cancellations. A full updated schedule was made available to students May 1.

As a New York state institution and a member of the SUNY system, Oswego’s campus will have to comply with any mandates issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“While there are still many unknowns at this time, the leadership team and I are hard at work and vetting several possible plans for SUNY Oswego for the Fall 2020 semester, including face-to-face should government and health guidelines allow,” SUNY Oswego president Deborah Stanley said. “We will also institute all necessary health and safety measures.”

Due to the constant changing nature of the virus, Mary Walker Health Center will maintain its current appointment-only policy until the COVID-19 pandemic comes to a close, allowing for proper screening of students and added safety for both students and personnel.

Telehealth will also remain available until the current threat is no longer existent.

Students will still be required to complete COVID-19 questionnaires and will be screened by a nurse prior to their appointment.

“There will be a separation of sick and healthy students in the waiting area for those students that are seen face-to-face,” Director of Student Health Services Angie Brown said.

Additional precautions will include requiring students to wear a mask or covering while present at Health Services.

Currently, Oswego Health has made a mobile testing site available, although Health Services may have the ability to test under some circumstances should test kits become more readily available.

Penfield Library has been impacted by the epidemic as well, providing about 95 percent of its services online.

“As we plan for the fall, we will continue to provide all appropriate services to our students, faculty and staff, and adapt library operations and use of the facilities in concert with the guidelines from the Governor on social distancing and limiting human density in our academic buildings,” Provost Scott Furlong said. “As an example, we may need to limit the number of students sitting at individual tables or in small group study rooms.”

Orientation for both first-year and transfer students, which were scheduled to stretch between the months of June and August, will become available online, still requiring incoming students to activate their email and complete their academic and health history information.

Summer orientation has been broken into two different steps. A portion of the information made available during the orientation programs will be moved to the online world, while the remaining information will be delivered face-to-face during the Fall Opening.

“In addition to online summer modules we are building, we are in the process of developing ways to engage new students with Laker Leaders through videoconferencing, social media and other platforms,” college Vice President Jerri Howland said.

While aiming to build a quality first-year class this fall, the safety and health of the campus community remains the top priority, college officials say.

“Residence Life and Housing will adapt based on how many students are allowed back on campus following future guidelines received from the Governor on social distancing and limiting human density in our residential buildings,” Howland said.

In terms of sanitizing, SUNY Oswego has custodial coverage seven days a week that routinely disinfects residence halls, all rooms, offices and any spaces utilized.

Daily cleaning protocols also include door handles, light switches, faucets and door knobs, among others.

Dining halls will remain take-out or delivery only, pursuant to Gov. Cuomo’s Executive Orders.

Concerning study abroad programs, SUNY has canceled student study abroad for the summer session.

“SUNY Oswego and SUNY leadership are closely monitoring the evolving situation and have not yet made a determination about the Fall,” Furlong said.

When it comes to the Fall semester, SUNY Oswego plans on welcoming new and returning international students.

“We are proceeding as we normally would to recruit, enroll and retain our international student population and will continue to work within any new guidelines received from the state and SUNY,” Associate Provost for International Education and Programs Josh McKeown said. “It’s an uncertain time but staff in the Office of International Education and Programs is prepared, like the rest of the Oswego campus, to be flexible and adjust as the situation demands.”

In the event that SUNY Oswego returns to normalcy in the Fall, the college will have to adhere to CDC guidelines and in some cases those applying to the state of New York to ensure students’ safety.

Master’s project examines students’ relationships with technology

[et_pb_section][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text]
Complicated relationship — The master’s in strategic communication “Integrated Media Projects” course analyzed data on students’ relationships with technology and developed this video summarizing some results.

A group of master’s in strategic communication students, working a large-scale student survey from 2019, found students have a complicated relationship with technology and their smartphones.

The Student Survey on Attitudes Toward Technology (SSATT) is conducted annually to collect information from freshmen and seniors about their relationship to the technologies they use as students and young adults. The data analysis and media design exercise is carried out by students in the course “Integrated Media Projects” course, under the supervision of faculty advisor Ulises Mejias of the communication studies department, and with help of the college’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.

While that survey of 367 students preceded this semester’s move to remote learning, it nonetheless showed the internet and smartphones’ enormous impact on their lives.

Among the findings on how students live and learn with technology:

  • 58 percent agree that the internet has had a positive effect on their lives
  • 77 percent said they check their smartphones as soon as they wake up, although they admitted this habit can provide added stress and anxiety
  • 71 percent agreed that they are distracted by their personal devices in class, while freshman are significantly more likely to lose focus in class/work by checking their cell phones than seniors
  • Half of the students said they are distracted by their devices during face-to-face communication
  • Two-thirds of the participants strongly agreed or agreed that they were notified by important issues through social media
  • 68 percent of students said they look up more information on social issues discovered via social media
  • 60 percent of students reported they fact-check or cross-check news stories
  • 45 percent said they rely on social media as their only source of news
  • 71 percent said they text others in class or when doing work outside of class

Some 2019 figures show the importance of access to reliable internet, even before this semester’s shift to learning online:

  • 85.8 percent of participants said they strongly agreed or agreed they would not be able to maintain coursework without the internet
  • 77.7 percent either strongly agreed or agreed that not having access to high-speed internet would impact their academic performance
  • Seniors relied on high speed internet access significantly more than freshman

Building awareness

Strategic communication major Fabio Machado said the findings should prove helpful for SUNY Oswego students to better understand their relationship with technology, as well as for anybody interested in how technology and academics can better connect.

“I think we can improve the relationship, and learn how to take what is positive from it and try to maybe work on the negatives,” said Machado, who was the social media analyst for the project. “Maybe we can look at how we can make our students more aware about how they’re using technology and what is beneficial with them, what is positive about your interactions and what is not. What you can control better.”

Fellow strategic communication major Nick Derbabian noted that data was especially relevant because it utilized attitudes from fellow students. Since it was the first survey of its type, he added, the group was working with a blank slate in finding students’ positive and negative relationships with technology.

“I think a big finding that we saw was how it was contradicting sometimes. They found their phone and having access to the internet were sometimes distracting to them,” said Derbabian, the project support officer. “But they also said: ‘We absolutely need computers and the internet to get our coursework done.’”

“They acknowledge how distracting it can be in classes or how when they wake up it was the first thing they check,” Machado said.

The team was surprised to learn two out of every three students relied on social media for news to such a high extent, but found it encouraging that many sought out other sources.

In addition to Machado and Derbabian, the master’s students in the team included Kurt Albrecht, data analyst; Curtis Cady, video designer and producer; Brenna Maclsaac, website and tap course designer; and Pedro Boller, website designer and SEO analyst.

Limited Commuter Parking At SUNY Oswego

Photo of two cars in a parking lot

Students from SUNY Oswego find it difficult to park in Commuter Lot 8. When the commuter lot is full, students know the consequences and park in a non-vehicle spot, red brick pavement. Students, like Juliann Geraci and Adam Pignatti, explain their opinion on their struggles.

“You notice people would pull over those pavements and even if they know they would get the ticket, they would park there and be late to class,” Adam Pignatti said.

According to University Police, Lieutenant Barbeau. He states the statistic of tickets on the month of February issues 85 tickets given due to non-vehicle parking. He also mentioned the total number of tickets compared from last semester to now, is more of an issue from the beginning of last semester to now.

Juliann Geraci suggests that schools should come up with a better method of developing the spaces in the commuter lot to prevent the issues.

New York State Plastic Bag Law In Effect

Sign in a storer saying "reusable bags $.99 + tax" "large insulated bags $2.99 + tax"

New York State passed a law banning plastic bags on March 1st of this year. However, the state will not begin implementing fines on retailers until at least April 1st. Most stores are switching to paper bags, but these tend to come at a charge because they are more expensive than the previously used single-use plastic bags.

Bosco’s manager. Theresa Himes, says the local grocery store has also began selling reusable bags to customers  “We discontinued the plastic ones. We’re using paper bags for some people that don’t have the reusable or don’t want to purchase them.”

Customers are encouraged to bring their own bags when shopping, to not only reduce waste but money, as well. If anyone is in need of any reusable bags, they can stop by City Hall to pick some up for free.

Oswego’s Unusual Winter

Winter may not be over yet, but just by looking around you would think it ended weeks ago. The few signs that remain of winter slowly melted away last week as temperatures soared into the 40’s. According to Dr. Scott Steiger the local co-op observer for the National Weather Service, we’ve only received forty-nine point one inches of snow as of February 29th.

The amount of snow Oswego has received over the past few months.
November: 5.9 Inches
December: 17.3 Inches
January: 6.6 Inches
February: 19.3 Inches

An alarming seven feet below the average snowfall for this time of year. Though it’s not surprising that we’ve seen so little snowfall, through the winter months Oswego ran 2.9 degrees above average temperature-wise. January saw the worst of the effects of the warm winter at an amazing 6 degrees above average.

Temperatures difference for this year between the normal average temperatures
December: 0.3 degrees above normal
January: 6.0 degrees above normal
February: 2.4 degrees above normal

Students, either way, have taken advantage of the spring-like conditions and have used the time to spend their days outside. While others were left waiting for the snow that never came like Florida native Bruno Rojas. Bruno had this to say about the past winter in Oswego “There weren’t that many lake effect events in Oswego so you never really got to see…big snow storms, where you could just sit down you know in the snow and just kind of watch the really big snowflakes kind of fall really gracefully. ”

Many have expressed similar views, asking constantly where was winter this year? The answer? There was a strong Arctic Oscillation or AO, that was in its positive phase. When it’s in a positive phase we oftentimes see a lot of the cold air trapped up in Canada. It’s when it enters its negative phase that it starts to allow the colder air to funnel down into the United States. and that’s what allows for those cold Oswego winters that we all know.

While this was certainly an anomalous winter, it is part of a longer-term trend of winter warming across upstate New York. The trend becomes obvious on this chart from climate central, showing how Syracuse’s average winter temperatures have warmed 2.8° since 1970. While this chart is only for Syracuse, the changes can be seen all across New York as our climate continues to change.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Oswego's St. Patrick's Day Parade featuring the Ancient Order of Hibernians

Oswego held its third annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade this weekend. The parade started at Alex’s on the Water, continued down Bridge Street and ended at Gibby’s Irish Pub on West Second Street. The parade was put on by the Oswego Chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

The temperature outside was cold, but the bands were red hot. A highlight of the parade was the Buffalo Bills Drumline, the bagpipes and drum bands. Entry to the parade is free in order to encourage growth of the parade.

Patrick Chalone, coordinator of the parade and a member of the Hibernians, hopes that the Oswego Parade can compete with the Syracuse Parade. He was also glad that local business and the community of oswego enjoyed the parade! He said “Well you know I think after today’s parade,  I looked at it and my favorite part of the parade is seeing all of the smiling faces on the streets of Oswego in the crowd. I mean we had a great crowd today it justs makes me feel good knowing that we’ve done…made people happy and have done a good thing”.

Next year’s parade is expected to be even larger than this year and Chalone is hoping that more local businesses will be involved in the parade next year. If you are interested in attending next year’s parade be sure to talk to Patrick Chalone about signing up

Funnelle Hall’s Renovations

The front entrance of Funnelle Hall in Oswego, New York

Located in the heart of campus, just steps away from the Marano Campus Center and Cooper Fitness and Dining, lies the nine floor building Funnelle Hall.

Built in 1965, Funnelle is home to over 400 SUNY Oswego students.

SUNY Oswego announced they will be doing major renovations to the building, starting at the beginning of the Spring 2020 semester. Students living in Funnelle Hall will need to relocate once construction is started.

Renovations will be finished for the 2020 Fall semester.

According to Funnelle Hall RA Charlie Chapman, he doesn’t see the construction being an issue for students.

“I don’t think it will be too hard on them. They’ll probably just move out, they’ll probably have the same roommate. They’ll just be somewhere else, depending on where they have classes it might be a further walk but it should be fine,” said Chapman.

Student Jason Lin has aspirations about what the renovations will consist of.

“I think for Funnelle Hall they should renovate the kitchen area, and the lounges to make them more modern and more spacious for people to hang out in,” said Lin.

For the students moving to new dorms, once the renovations are done they will likely be able to relocate back to Funnelle, and enjoy its updates.

This project is expected to be a great improvement for SUNY Oswego, and will surely put the “fun” in Funnelle.

On November 12th, Disney has launched their new streaming service, Disney plus, and just by the results, many seems to love this new site.

As of November 12th, 10 Million people subscribed to Disney plus and the numbers kept on rising till this day.

With endless content in the provider, more than 500 movies are inputted into the site, which includes many classics such as Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and more and many of modern movies as well. This site also have included a multitude of many Disney’s original series, going all the way back from the early 2000s, like That’s So Raven, Wizards of Waverly Place, Hannah Montana, and more. Plus, they have also implemented their own new series, such as the Mandalorian (which is connected with Star Wars).

Since Disney Plus also have content from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographics, this attracts many different demographics and they are able to watch whatever they please.

Now that Disney Plus is in the scene, major competition stirs within the streaming world, which includes Amazon Prime Videos, HBO GO, and on top: Netflix. With Netflix making new deals such as making a collaboration with Nickelodeon to produce various of their shows, Disney and Nickelodeon once again butt heads as to who should take the top spot.

As many students are satisfied with the nostalgic feeling from both Disney and Nickelodeon, they share their response to matter of the rivalry between Disney Plus and Netflix.

“I think that Netflix has a lot more going for them than Disney. It may draw away a few people to watch a few Disney movies, you know on Netflix, but in the long run, I don’t think that Netflix should have much to worry about regarding Disney Plus. ”- Damon Fletcher

Others say otherwise,

“I think I feel bad for Netflix because I just feel that Disney owns a lot, it’s a huge conglomerate, so they have a lot more to offer right now I think than Netflix does.” – Ivanelis Fletcher

And some are in the middle

“Either people have Netflix or Disney Plus now. They are like watching monopolies like Disney get ESPN, Netflix gets a deal with Nickelodeon. Like it’s just crazy how they are just taking over on what people watch on regular TV anymore.”- Matthew Van Ihsem

With this new craze, Disney Plus is releasing more content and more students are subscribing.

Young Entrepreneurs at Oswego

A company called "Afro Rock" receiving a check for $2000 due to winning the Launch It event.

OSWEGO, NY – Last Friday was the final day of the event by Enactus at Oswego called Launch It. It’s an entrepreneur event where students take their idea for a product they can sell and pitch it to other people who work or run their own business.

Students give those judges the rundown of what the product is, along with the finances, profits and marketing strategies that would give their idea as much success as possible.

This event included not only prize money to the winner to invest in their product, but it also featured an opening concert by Feyde, a R&B artist.

Over a dozen students gave insightful ideas that may very well have tons of potential. The enthusiasm from the students was fantastic as the team at Enactus stated, was the most successful year they’ve had so far.

Students Adjust to Snow at SUNY Oswego

SUNY Oswego's Quad covered in snow with a single light pole and tree.

OSWEGO, NY— Last week, SUNY Oswego students were ambushed with mountains worth of snow! Many would be surprised by the outcome of this week, being that there is little to no snow at all.

Instead of going out with friends, students like Breanna Walker preferred to stay inside and keep warm. She also gave us some advice on how to dress if students do decide to out for the weekend.

“The key to it is, I stay inside, and if I do go outside I bundle up. I wear two pairs of pants, my sweater and coat, and my snow boots.”

Despite their being such a drastic weather change, the wind chills were still very high. If students feel that they are getting sick, then they have the opportunity to go to Hewitt Union, where Mary Walker Health Center is located. They can also go to the Artville Store where they have medicine, along with cough syrup and cough drops.

“Drink tea and stay warm.” Breanna Walker said. “Make sure not to get other people sick.”

Some are excited to see the snow being that we’re a few weeks closer to Christmas break! Others are not looking forward to the continuous amounts of snow, due to transportation reasons.
