Oswego women’s hockey annihilates Morrisville

OSWEGO N.Y. — It was another day at the office for this Lakers team as they added another blowout victory to their resume. The Lakers faced off against Morrisville State last night and proved just how good this team is. Despite not being able to get anything going in the first, this Laker team was just warming up as they rest of the contest was pure domination. The Lakers found success just thirty-eight seconds into the second period when sophomore Kyleigh Grugin scored her eighth goal of the season. Just minutes after sophomore Sophia Kyrkostas put the Lakers up two nothing. Freshman Ashlyn McGrath was a monster out there scoring two goals on the. night. Grugin also had two goals in a very impressive performance per usual. The Lakers would score four goals in the second period leaving Morrisville scrambling for answers. It was quite the night for the freshman on the team as Mack Hull scored the last goal of the game. The Lakers were firing on all cylinders and proved that they are a very dangerous team when they get on that ice. This increases their win streak to seven. The Lakers look to finish strong as they go on the road this Tuesday to take on Buff State. Game starts at 7!

Oswego State women’s hockey wins in dominant fashion

OSWEGO N.Y. — A good ole fashion blowout. That’s what this game could be named. The Oswego State women’s hockey team faced off against the Buffalo State Bengals Wednesday night and held them scoreless. This dominant victory showcased just how impressive this Lakers team is. The Lakers now move to 12-7-1 on the season, and 9-4-1 in the SUNYAC Conference. This impressive five score victory was just what the Lakers needed to build more momentum moving forward. Some key contributors in this contest were freshman Ashlyn McGrath who led the Lakers with two goals on the night, as well as one assist. The freshman has proved this season that she’s here to stay and will be an integral part of this Lakers team for years to come. Sophomore Rachel Corbett also had an impressive performance with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Mia Conboy had a goal as well and was impressive throughout the contest. If this Lakers team continues to dominate, they will be very hard to stop in the coming weeks as the season heats up. The Lakers are set to have their senior night this Friday in the Deb Stan Arena. Oswego State women’s hockey shuts out SUNY Canton in consecutive games

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team defeated SUNY Canton in back-to-back games last weekend, winning 5-0 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday. With these pair of victories, the Lakers improve to 11-7-1 on the season and 8-4-1 in NEWHL play.

Saturday’s game was on the road where the Lakers took command early on. After putting up seven shots-on-goal to start the game, freshman Lizzie Burke got Oswego on the board at the 8:29 mark of the opening stanza. Just six minutes later, the Canton received a powerplay opportunity following a Laker tripping penalty. However, Oswego scored a short-handed goal with 28 seconds left in the first period. Captain Philomena Teggart and junior Ariella Haas assisted Simone Bednarik on the score. Early on into the second period, Morgan Shines put the Lakers up 3-0 off an assist by Kyleigh Grugin and Avery Webster. Oswego continued their dominant offensive performance as they found the net once again just 46 seconds later, this time being a goal from Taylor Hudon. After some back-and-forth runs by each team in the final period, the Lakers scored their fifth and final goal of the night courtesy of Ashlyn McGrath. Oswego out-shot Canton 33-14 in Saturday’s contest with sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Hiebert going perfect on the night, saving all 14 Kangaroo shots.

The Lakers and Kangaroos met once again just one day later, this time being in the Deborah F. Stanley arena. Much like their previous matchup, Oswego started Sunday’s game off hot from the opening puck-drop. Junior Emily Gustafson netted her first goal of the season just 5:50 into the first period to put the Lakers up by one. Towards the end of the first frame, freshman Mack Hull made it a 2-0 game when she found the back of the net. Both teams went scoreless throughout much of the second period until Sophia Kyrkostas netted a powerplay goal with three minutes remaining. Midway through the final stanza, Lizzie Burke added an insurance goal to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Oswego improved in the shots column from the first matchup, this time outshooting the ‘Roos 45-18. Joanna Hiebert was outstanding in goal once again, racking up 18 saves and recording her fourth shutout of the season.

After an impressive weekend which saw junior Morgan Shines win the Oswego State athlete of the week honor, the women’s hockey team is now tied for 2nd place in the NEWHL with SUNY Cortland. Oswego will look to carry this momentum into Tuesday’s match against Buffalo State before competing in a rubber-match verses SUNY Canton on Friday. Puck-drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at Buffalo State on Tuesday.

Oswego State women’s hockey back in win column

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team got back into the win column on Friday night with a 2-1 conference victory over the Morrisville State Mustangs on home ice. The Lakers got their sixth conference win after the game winning goal came in the third period on the powerplay. Oswego State scored first in the contest with a goal in the first period to take the lead. Lizzie Burke got the lone period goal with an assist from Morgan Shines. The Lakers and Mustangs would go scoreless in the second period to keep the game a one goal game heading into the final stanza. Just thirty-nine seconds into the third period, Morrisville State tied the game to make for an exciting finish. Simone Bednarik was able to capitalize on the man advantage after burying a goal after a pass from defenseman Chyne Kennedy. Oswego State was able to hold on for the victory and Joanna Hiebert got the win in between the pipes for the Lakers. The goaltender made fourteen saves over the course of the contest and only gave up one goal against.

That win puts Oswego State tied for third place in the NEWHL conference standings. The team has thirteen points along with SUNY Canton. Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland still sit above the Lakers while SUNY Potsdam, Morrisville State, and Buffalo State round out the conference. Oswego will now set their sights on SUNY Canton as the Lakers will face off against the Kangaroos the next three games. The series kicks off on Friday, February 4th, in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena as the contest is set for a 3:00 p.m. puck drop against the Kangaroos. On Saturday, Oswego State will head on the road to play in Canton with another 3:00 p.m. contest. Oswego State women’s hockey falls in non-conference rematch

GENEVA, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team fell to William Smith College 2-1 on Tuesday, bringing their record to 8-7-1. This marks the Lakers third consecutive loss and first loss against the Herons this season, after previously defeating them in a 1-0 contest last November.

Both teams attacked the net early in the game, exchanging shot after shot. However, it wasn’t until 9:44 in the first period where senior Chyne Kennedy put the Lakers up 1-0 on a shot assisted by Ashlyn McGrath. The Lakers outshot the Herons 19-9 in the first stanza, with nine of those shots being saved by Erin Murray. Nearly 14 minutes intro the second period, an Oswego interference penalty gave William Smith a 5-on-4 advantage. The Herons were able to capitalize on the powerplay opportunity and score with 6:23 left in the period. Neither team was able to score in the remaining six minutes despite both squads having power-play chances. Heading into the third period, it didn’t take long for the Herons to break the tie as they scored just two minutes in, taking a 2-1 lead. Throughout the remaining 18 minutes of regulation, both teams had were provided with power-play opportunities but weren’t able to cash-in. The Lakers had many great looks and took an abundance of shots, but weren’t able to find the back of the net. With 1:32 left in the game, Oswego pulled goalie Bryn White in order to take a few last-minute shots. They were able to rattle off six shots, but came up just short at the final buzzer.

Oswego dominated in many areas of the game including total shots, shots-on-goal and faceoffs, but weren’t able to capitalize on their power-play opportunities. Although the Lakers dropped their final non-conference game of the 2021-22 season, they still remain fourth place in the NEWHL standings. They’ll have the opportunity to rebound from this loss against Morrisville State College on Friday, Jan. 28, before a three-game series versus SUNY Canton the following week. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena.

A Look Ahead: Oswego State women’s hockey heads to Geneva

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team heads into this week after a disappointing trip to the North Country to take on conference rival Plattsburgh State. The Lakers fell in both games over the weekend and enter the week with an overall record of 8-6-1. In the NEWHL conference, Oswego State holds the third spot behind Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland with a total of 11 points. The conference record of 5-4-1 is only two points better than SUNY Canton who is in the last spot in the playoffs if the post season started right now.

The Lakers will have this coming weekend off but first will travel to Geneva, New York to face off against the Williams Smith Herons. Recently, the Lakers lost forward Megan Teachout to the transfer portal. Teachout was able to produce on the offensive side of the puck but Oswego State was able to fill the hole in their offense this past weekend. Oswego State has already played Williams Smith this season back in November prior to Thanksgiving Break. The Lakers took that game by a score line of 1-0 as Ariella Haas netted the lone goal which was assisted by Chyne Kennedy and Emily Gustafson. Netminder Joanna Hiebert got the win in between the pipes for the Lakers with a total of 15 saves and the shutout. Against the Herons, the Lakers are 4-2-1 all time against the program hailing from Geneva. Oswego State lost 1-3 last time the group traveled for a road game against the opponent.

The Lakers will look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon as puck drop is set for 8:00 p.m. in Geneva. WTOP 10 will continue to to provide coverage of the Oswego State women’s hockey team as the squad continues their 2021-22 season.

Oswego State women’s hockey comes up short against Plattsburgh this weekend

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — It was a rough weekend for the Lakers as they suffered two unfortunate losses, one being a NEWHL game. The Lakers went on the road to take on Plattsburgh State in their first meeting of the weekend. They were hungry for victory and proved it when they went up 3-0 in the first period. Just nine minutes into the contest senior Chyne Kennedy put the lakers on the board with an assist from Mia Conboy. Sophomore Rachel Corbett added to the lakers lead with eight minutes left in the first. Just before the first period came to an end, Sophomore Sophia Kyrkostas scored with assists from Simone Bednarik and Ariella Haas capping off a dominant first period. It was all downhill after the first as the Lakers lost the momentum they had built up, eventually letting up six goals by the end of the contest to conclude Plattsburgh’s three point victory.

The Lakers went back to work against Plattsburgh State the following day in hopes of getting some revenge after their heartbreaking loss. During the first period it was neck to neck with freshman Ashlyn McGrath putting the Lakers on the board just two minutes into the contest. With six minutes into the first Plattsburgh tied the game up. From there the momentum was in their favor and the Cardinals went on to score two more goals in the second. Down two goals the Lakers tried to make some magic happen and pull off a comeback, unfortunately they couldn’t get anything cooking and ultimately lost 4-1. The Lakers look to bounce back after these two losses when they go on the road to play William Smith College this Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in Geneva. Oswego State women’s hockey shuts down Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — It was a very impressive performance for the Oswego State women’s hockey team Tuesday night as they shut out SUNY Morrisville 8-0. Everything was clicking for the Lakers as they easily soared past the opposing team in this NEWHL matchup. Junior Ariella Haas left it all on the ice with a whopping four goals to lead the team to victory. Other scores for the Lakers include Morgan Shines, Chyne Kennedy, and Taylor Hudson. The Lakers were off to an electric start when transfer Chyne Kennedy scored her first goal as a Laker against her former Morrisville squad just a minute into the matchup. This goal set the pace for the rest of the contest as the Lakers kept the goals coming in hot. With only four losses on the season the Lakers are establishing themselves as a very dominant team capable of shutting down opponents with ease.

With this incredible performance the Lakers head to the two seed SUNY Plattsburgh in a rivalry game that should not disappoint. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in North Country. Oswego Women’s Hockey splits in weekend homestand

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team split in back-to-back home games this weekend, falling to Plattsburgh State 5-2 on Friday before avenging their loss with a victory over SUNY Cortland 2-1 the following night.

It’s been an interesting start to the new year for the women’s hockey team. After their first two games of 2022 were cancelled, the Lakers dropped their first game of the year last week against Utica College. Looking to get one in the win column, the Lakers went into their game against Plattsburgh hungry for a victory. The Cardinal started the game off hot, scoring the first two goals of the contest opening period. Going into the second period, it took just 54 for sophomore forward Morgan Shines to get the Lakers on the board. Plattsburgh lead 2-1 heading into the third period. With 15:23 remaining in the game, Amanda Zenstein took a shot on net during a Lakers power play. Sophomore Kyleigh Grugin was able to rebound and snuck the puck into the goal, tying the game a 2 apiece. Though, following this momentum shift, Plattsburgh would go on to score three unanswered goals to end the period. This was the Lakers second loss to the #2 ranked Cardinal this season as they fell to them in a 5-0 contest on Nov. 13.

Heading into Saturday’s game versus SUNY Cortland, the Lakers were in need of a win to keep pace in the competitive NEWHL. Despite the first period be scoreless, the Lakers had a dominant 11-3 edge in shots-on-goal. Just 4:47 into the second period, Cortland stuck first with a goal, taking a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, the Lakers took advantage of a three-on-one fast break and scored off a Morgan Shines tip-in goal. Throughout the rest of the second period, the Lakers found themselves in penalty trouble. Twice they were two-women down, but were able to kill the penalty efficiently. The game remained knotted up until senior captain Philomena Teggart scored the go-ahead goal with 2:30 left on the clock. This was Teggart’s first goal of the season and she couldn’t have picked a more opportune time to score it. Joanna Hiebert finished the game with 19 saves while Kyleigh Grugin and Ariella Haas each totaled an assist.

The Oswego State women’s hockey team now sits at 7-4-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in NEWHL play. Following this win, the Lakers will look to carry their momentum into Tuesday’s contest against Morrisville State College. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m. at Morrisville.

Oswego State women’s hockey falls just short in non-conference matchup

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team fell short on Sunday in a very close battle against the Utica College Pioneers. This game was the definition of fight to the finish as both teams were hungry for a victory and the final score was 3-2 in favor of the Pioneers. Just 6 minutes into the game freshman Mack Hull was able to strike first for the Lakers giving them a one goal lead. The Watertown native has proved to be an integral part of this team especially on offense. Hull had another opportunity to score late in the second but fell short. Entering the third it was anyone’s game as Utica led two to one. Sophomore Kyleigh Grugin was able to strike in the third tying things up for the Lakers. With just two minutes left on the clock, a deflected puck led to a breakaway opportunity that sealed the 3-2 victory for the Pioneers. This was undoubtedly a fight until the very end and a loss that the Lakers surely won’t forget about anytime soon. The Lakers are set to take on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals this Friday in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Puck drops at 3:00 p.m. on WTOP10! A Look Ahead: Oswego State women’s hockey prepares for non-conference contest against Utica College

OSWEGO, N.Y. — On Sunday, the Oswego State women’s hockey team will return home to host non-conference opponent Utica College. The Pioneers will travel west down Interstate-90 to take on the Lakers in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. The 3:00 p.m. puck drop will feature the Utica College team that currently holds an overall record of 9-2. The team currently is second in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference with an 8-0-0 conference record. On the other side, the Lakers are 6-2-1 heading into the matchup after having four contests cancelled this week due to COVID-19 concerns. Oswego State is also third in the NEWHL conference and has a conference record of 3-2-1.

The Pioneers were supposed to take on number one team in the nation Middlebury College prior to their matchup with Oswego State but the game was postponed most likely due to COVID-19. In terms of the matchup history, the Lakers are 9-15-2 against the Pioneers but Oswego State is currently on a two-game win streak against the non-conference opponent. Their last game was February 8th, 2020 in which the Lakers won 2-1 on the road. While in the national spotlight, the Oswego State Lakers are ranked sixteenth in the pairwise ranking while the Utica College Pioneers are two spots behind them in eighteenth. Faceoffs will be a big part of the contest as both teams head into the contest with a percentage higher than .580. Oswego State forwards Morgan Shines and Rachel Corbett will be essential in the faceoff circles on Sunday. The Lakers offense, led by Ariella Haas and Megan Teachout will need to continue their dominance Sunday afternoon after scoring an average of 3.1 goals a game in the first half of the season.

Progress Report: Oswego State women’s hockey

OSWEGO, N.Y. — As the fall semester comes to a close, the Oswego State women’s hockey team finishes the first half of their 2021-22 season. The Lakers are 6-2-1 after nine games played and are third in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL). Oswego State posts a 3-0-2-1 record in conference play and trail behind Plattsburgh State and SUNY Cortland. Those two loses come from the two opponents the Lakers are chasing for the conference lead. The Lakers were able to string together a three game win streak heading into Christmas break after defeating SUNY Potsdam, Williams Smith, and SUNY Cortland.

So far this season, the Lakers have been led by Ariella Haas and Megan Teachout on offense. So far, the transfer from Elmira College has two goals and seven assists for nine points in her first season with Oswego State. Haas is currently the only Laker that is a point per game. Teachout, Kyleigh Grugin, and Morgan Shines are all tied for lead in goals with each player tallying four. The offense averages 3.1 goals per game with 40.4 shots per game.

On the other side of the puck, the defensive core has averaged only 2.0 goals allowed through nine games played. Defenseman Avery Webster leads the team in blocks with seven and also has four assists. In between the pipes, the goaltender tandem of Joanna Hiebert and Bryn White have done a solid job after starting their first season with the Lakers. Head Coach Mark Digby has given both goaltenders time in games but Hiebert has gotten the majority with six games played. The Michigan native currently posts a 2.30 goals against average with a .875 save percentage. White has less time in net but posts better numbers holding a 1.33 goals against average and a save percentage of .915.

After the break, Oswego State will ring in the new year with a trip to Massachusetts to take on nonconference opponent Amherst College. The January 3rd match up will be the fifth game between these two programs. Amherst currently holds the advantage in the match up history with the Mammoths holding the record 3-1. Oswego will head back to NEWHL play on January 7th when Oswego State heads to Morrisville to take on the Mustangs. Oswego State women’s hockey completes comeback to secure victory in Cortland

CORTLAND N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team traveled down Interstate 81 on Friday to take on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. The Lakers tallied four goals in the final period of regulation to win the NEWHL contest 5-4. Oswego State would strike first in the first period as Simone Bednarik would net her second goal of this season. Megan Teachout would add another assist to her stats column and the Lakers headed into the first intermission with the lead. The Red Dragons would come back in the second period and put three goals past Oswego State netminder Joanna Hiebert. Oswego would not have an answer until the third period. The Lakers would snag a powerplay goal off the twig of Mack Hull. The forward got her fourth goal of the season which was assisted by Chyne Kennedy and Ariella Haas. Cortland would respond with another goal only minutes later. From this point on, the game was in the hands of the Lakers as the women’s hockey team rallied back in the final stanza. Goals from Kyleigh Grugin, Lizzie Burke, and the game winner from Hull. Kennedy would get the assist on the game winning goal to put her assist total at two that day.

Oswego State improves to 6-2-1 overall during the 2021-22 season. In terms of the NEWHL conference, the Lakers find themselves back in second place after the victory with a conference record of 3-0-2-1 and seven total points. Oswego State will have some time to take a break and enjoy their holiday season before returning back in 2022. The Lakers will travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on Amherst College in a non-conference match up on January 3rd. Oswego State women’s hockey narrowly edges past William Smith 1-0

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team narrowly defeated the William Smith Herons on Tuesday 1-0. With this victory, the Lakers improve to 5-2-1 this season and enter their Thanksgiving break on a two-game win streak.

Oswego and William Smith played and extremely physical game from buzzer-to-buzzer. Early on, Oswego found themselves in penalty trouble but were able to efficiently kill the clock. For much of the first period, the Lakers offensive zone pressure smothered the Herons, allowing only three shots in the opening 20 minutes. As the game started to heat up, Oswego found themselves in a 5-on-4 situation in the second period, but were unable to capitalize on the powerplay. However five minutes into the third period, junior forward Ariella Haas scored the game’s lone goal off assists from both Chyne Kennedy and Emily Gustafson.

Oswego continued their dominance in the faceoff circle again on Tuesday, winning 29-17. Haas les the Lakers in faceoff wins (10-5), followed by Morgan Shines (8-4) and Sara Cruise (6-2). Starting goalkeeper Joanna Hiebert also continued her hot streak in this matchup, recording her second consecutive shutout and third of the season.

The Lakers are now 5-2-1 on the season and sit third place in the NEWHL standings. Following Thanksgiving break, Oswego will have a prime opportunity to move up in the standings as they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons, who sit second in the NEWHL. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.

Women’s hockey breaks winless streak with big win

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego women’s hockey team got an extra day of preparation and rest for Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Potsdam after Friday’s game got postponed that was supposed to be played against SUNY Canton. The Lakers came in on a three game winless streak, but they snapped that with a dominant 5-0 victory over the Bears for the Teddy Bear Toss game. The first Lakers goal came nine minutes into the first period on the power play, where a shot from Avery Webster would be saved, but the rebound fell to Morgan Shines who put it in the back of the net. The Lakers wouldn’t score again in the first period, but dominated the second period, putting it past the goalie three times. The second goal of the game was off of another rebound, the initial shot was by Megan Teachout, with Ariella Haas cleaning up for her first of three points in the game. Teachout scored the third goal, deking through defenders on a four on four to score a spectacular goal. The third goal of the period came on the power play again, with Mack Hull winning and putting away a scramble in front of the net. The Lakers defense proved their prowess in the second period, shutting down a 5 on 3 situation at one point, and goalie Joanna Hiebert stopping a 2 on 1 break away at another point. Oswego’s final goal came in the third period, on the power play again, Simone Bednarik scored with assists from Chyne Kennedy and Ariella Haas. The Lakers were dominant all game, winning the shot battle 53 to 7, and going 3-4 on the powerplay while keeping Potsdam to 0-5.

The Lakers next game comes against William Smith on Tuesday at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Coverage will start 6:45 p.m. on WTOP 10.

Oswego women’s hockey suffers first two losses on back-to-back skid

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team lost their first two games of the season this weekend, falling to SUNY Cortland 2-1 on Friday and SUNY Plattsburgh 5-0 on Saturday. For the first time in 2021, the Lakers were held to a goal or less in back-to-back outings as they weren’t able to find a rhythm offensively.

Oswego went into Friday’s game versus Cortland undefeated, looking to continue their stellar start to the season. Sophomore forward Morgan Shines started the game off hot, scoring the teams lone goal at the 11:48 mark of the first period. The scored remained 1-0 until midway through the second period when the Red Dragons scored two unanswered goals. Although the Lakers outshot the Red Dragons 43-23 in the contest, they were unable to find the back of the net again. Bryn White finished the game with 21 total saves while Shines led the team in the faceoff circle going 15-7.

The offensive woes would continue in their next game against the #1 ranked division III women’s hockey team, the Plattsburgh Cardinals. The Lakers came out swinging in the first period, having multiple good looks in the offensive zones. The Cardinals defense became more poised as the game went on and held the Lakers scoreless throughout the contest, racking up 31 saves. Plattsburgh got on the board in the first period and then went on to score four unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the game. Plattsburgh, who held Buffalo State to 0-1 the on power play the night prior, continued their dominant run against Oswego, holding them to 0-4 on the night.

The Oswego State women’s hockey team is now 3-2-1 on the year and sit fifth place in the NEWHL. They’ll have the chance to rebound next weekend in a two-game homestand against SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam. Puck drop Friday night is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Oswego State women’s hockey with two impressive performances this weekend

OSWEGO N.Y. — It was an exciting weekend for women’s hockey here at Oswego. The Lakers hosted the Buffalo State Bengals Saturday night in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena in hopes of staying undefeated. They did just that and won in dominant fashion with a final score of 8-1. The Lakers offense was electric combined with their spectacular defensive performance. Despite this impressive victory, the Lakers found themselves down by 1 at the end of the first when senior Angelina Cruzzal put the Bengals on the board. From there the Lakers were relentless, not letting their opponent score another goal. Freshman Mack Hull scored her first goal as a Laker tying it up early in the second. Less than 2 minutes later, sophomore Kyleigh Grugin scored with an assist by Emily Gustafson. Morgan Shines added to the lead with 10 minutes left in the second. The Lakers were on a tear in the third period scoring 5 goals and shutting the Bengals down. Goals in the third from Rachel Corbett, Kyleigh Grugin, Morgan Shines, Sophia Kyrkostas, and Mia Conboy sealed the victory. With this dominant win the Lakers kept the undefeated streak alive with a record of 3-0 heading into Sunday’s contests.

The Lakers hosted SUNY Potsdam today in an overtime thriller resulting in a 4-4 tie. It was a battle from start to finish, with both teams refusing to lose. The Bears started off strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. Kaylee Merill put the Bears on the board with an assist from Emily DellaNeve. Stephanie Dunlap added to the lead shortly after. The Lakers were still very much in this game and proved it when Amanda Zenstein scored immediately following the face off. Cheye Kennedy then tied it up for the Lakers with four minutes remaining in the first period. The action continued in the second period as Potsdams’ Stephanie Dunlap scored her second goal for the Bears. The Lakers answered back minutes later with a goal from sophomore Kyleigh Grugin. With less than two minutes remaining in the second Potsdams’ Emily DellaNeve scored to break the tie. Fans were in for a showdown in the third. Amanda Zenstein found success once again with a goal early in the third period on the powerplay. From there it was a defensive battle until the end of regulation. With a tie game, the two teams were headed into overtime. Despite many close calls, neither team was able to seal the win and this game ended in a tie with great effort from both sides.

After this weekend, Oswego currently holds first in the NEWHL with three points posting a 1-0-1 conference record. The Lakers will travel to SUNY Cortland Friday with more conference points on the line in the NEWHL. Puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m. in Cortland.

Women’s Hockey starts season hot in midwest

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team took a road trip to the Midwest this weekend. The first game of the trip came against Adrian College in Michigan. Adrian College was undefeated in their last season before Covid stopped their chances at the national title. The Lakers would start the season hot with a 2-1 victory. The first period would see the Lakers get off six shots on target and Adrian have seven, but the period would end 0-0. Megan Teachout would open the scoring for the Lakers in the second period with an unassisted goal. Teachout would get the Lakers second goal of the night in the third period. The goal, assisted by Chyne Kennedy, would come on a power play. Adrian would score with less than a minute to go in the game to make it 2-1. Oswego Goalie Joanna Hiebert had a spectacular night in goal, recording 31 saves on 32 shots.

The second game of the weekend came against Trine University in Indiana. This was the first matchup between the two teams. The game wouldn’t start as well for the Lakers, as Trine scored half way into the first period with a power play goal to give them a 1-0 lead. The Lakers got on the scoreboard in the second period. A goal by Amanda Zenstein assisted by Philomena Teggart seven minutes into the second period would put momentum on the Lakers side. Megan Teachout got Oswego’s second goal of the night and her third on the weekend to make the game 2-1 Lakers in the third. Rachel Corbett had a good day in the face-off circle winning seven of her eight draws. Lakers goaltender Bryn White had sixteen total saves and one goal against in the victory.

The Lakers next game comes against Buffalo State at home on Saturday, November 6 at 3 p.m. where they open conference play in the NEWHL. Coverage will start on WTOP 10 at 2:30 p.m. with the pregame show streaming on wtop10.com/live and twitch.tv/wtop10tv.

Oswego State women’s hockey sweeps weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s hockey team started their season red hot this weekend. They played their first game of the season Friday night in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena against King’s College. The Women would come out firing with an 18-0 victory. The Lakers would score five in the first period, followed by nine in the second, and four in the third. Five players had two goals, with Kyleigh Grugin and Amanda Zenstein adding three assists to their two goals each. Those two players would lead the team with five points each.

The women’s hockey team would come back to the rink Saturday afternoon to take on Neumann University. They would come down to earth with a 7-0 win. The players were wearing their pink jerseys for their “Pink the Rink” promotion in support of those fighting Cancer, Cancer survivors, and those lost by Cancer. The first period was dominated in the Oswego offensive zone, with the women getting off fourteen shots to Neumann’s one, but couldn’t score. Megan Teachout would open the scoring for the Lakers about five minutes into the second period, her first of two on the night. Oswego would score four in the second period, followed by three in the third. Morgan Shines would also have two goals in the contest, both coming in the second period.

The Oswego State women’s hockey team’s next game is against Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan on Friday at 3 P.M.

Oswego Women’s Hockey secures Interim Head Coach

OSWEGO, NY — On Wednesday, June 17, the announcement was made by Oswego State Interim Athletics Director Eric Summers that the Women’s Ice Hockey team would be getting a new head coach, that being Mark Digby. Digby was the associate head coach of the team last season along side Diane Dillon, who will most likely retire from coaching. Dillon coached the team for 14 seasons. Digby will now be the Interim Head Coach heading into the 2020-21 season.

Digby graduated from SUNY Brockport in 2005 with a B.S. in Physical Education and M.S. in Recreation Management (2008). He would stay west of Rochester to be an assistant coach of the Men’s Hockey program from 2006-2010 before being hired by Oswego in the summer of 2010. Under Ed Gosek, Digby would be with the team while the group appeared in six NCAA tournaments, two frozen fours, and two national championship games.

In the Spring of 2019, Digby would make the switch to Women’s Hockey and join the team as the Associate Head Coach. During his first season with the group, the team would finish with a record of 16-7-4, the most wins for the program since the 2016-17 campaign. The Lakers would fall to the Plattsburgh Cardinals, the top team in the nation, in the NEWHL Championship. This was the first time the team has made the championship game after joining the conference. Overall, the group has made steady improvements and is in a good spot heading into the 2020-21 season under Digby. There looks to be a continued healthy relationship between the players and the coaching staff after Digby joined prior to this past season. Oswego Women’s Hockey announces 2020-21 Captains

OSWEGO, NY — On Sunday, April 26th, the Oswego State Women’s Hockey team announced their 2020-21 captains. Philomena Teggart and Aislinn McAleer will be the captains of the Lakers next season. Both players will be seniors next season and will be playing in their 4th season with the program. Philomena Teggart, the 5’ 7” defenseman from Pickering, Ontario, Canada, has 37 career points (12 goals & 25 assists) in 78 career games played over the past three seasons. This past year, Teggart finished third on the team in points and led defenseman with 21 points (9 goals & 12 assists). Aislinn McAleer, the 5’ 4” forward from Manasquan, New Jersey, has played in 60 career games and has recorded 6 points (2 goals & 4 assists) in the past three seasons. The forward recorded a goal and one assist last season, the goal coming against SUNY Cortland in a 3-2 win. These two players look to lead the Lakers in another successful season as the group were runner-up in the NEWHL conference this past season. Oswego State Women’s Hockey 2020-2021 Roster Updates

Oswego State Women’s Hockey 2020-2021 Roster Update #1 (4/18/20)

OSWEGO, NY — The Women’s Hockey team heads into the off season only losing a few players from their 2019-2020 roster. The team lost four players due to graduation along with three players during the course of the regular season for various reasons. In total, the Lakers lost four forwards, two defenseman, and two goaltenders that will need to be replaced this off season. Oswego moves forward searching for multiple goaltenders as both starter Rachael Farmer and back up Tia Trovato left the team. So of course, the starting position is open heading into next season. So far, it has been a quiet off season as the group has only secured five recruits.

As for the goaltending problem, the search for players between the pipes has ended as the Lakers have secured three goalies heading into next season. JoAnna Hiebert from Highland Charter Township, Michigan is one of the three goaltenders coming to Oswego to play between the pipes. Hiebert has played the past two seasons for Meijer AAA Hockey in Michigan in which the goaltender has been the starter for the team. The 5’ 7” goaltender played 34 games this season and recorded a 2.05 goals against average.

The second goaltender heading to Oswego State next season is Bryn White. The Colorado native played for the Boston Shamrocks that plays in the Junior Women’s Hockey League. The goaltender that catches left played 16 games this season for the Shamrocks in which White recorded a .848 save percentage with a 6.43 goals against average.

The third and final goaltender heading to play for the Lakers in Emilie Venne. Venne played for the Northwood Girls Hockey team located in Lake Placid, New York. The eighteen year old from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada catches left and will join JoAnna Hiebert and Bryn White inbetween the pipes next season for Oswego.

With only the notable loss of Eryn Stewart due to graduation, most of the Lakers offense will be back next season. Megan Teachout, Amber Thomas, and Morgan Shines will most likely return for the Lakers, which means the group will most likely look for players that can step into a secondary scoring spot and grow for years to come.Oswego has also picked up two forwards to add to the recruitment class. Rachel Corbett from Rochester, NY played for the U19 Buffalo Regals this past season. Corbett has been with the program for two years as the team played in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League this past season. Corbett along with 11 other players committed to an NCAA team for next season from this team.

The second forward to commit to Oswego is Sophia Kyrkostas from Selden, New York. Kyrkostas played for the Selects Academy located in Rochester, New York this past season. The 5’ 2” forward played with the Lady Islanders before heading to Rochester to play with the Selects.

Heading further into the off season, the Oswego State Lakers still need to find a few more players to complete their 2020-21 roster. The team would most likely look for two to three more defenseman to complete an 8-man unit as well as find two to three more forwards for four lines and two extra players. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver updates on both the Men’s and Women’s hockey teams heading into next season. Their 2020-21 schedules should be released around the middle of July.

Oswego State Women’s Hockey 2020-21 Roster Update #2 (5/29/20)

OSWEGO, NY — As the Women’s Hockey team continues into their off-season, the coaching staff has continued to grow their roster for the 2020-21 season. The Lakers look to build off their successful season with the addition of the Class of 2024, which currently includes players from all over North America. After the team lost seven players due to graduation and other situations, the group has secured five players so far, which includes three goaltenders to replace senior Rachael Farmer. Oswego also has added two players to their offensive core to play along side players like Megan Teachout, Amber Thomas, and Emily Gustafson. The projected roster for the 2020-21 season is noted in the graphic below.

Recently, Oswego State was able to recruit another forward to add to their depth up front. Ben Grieco  (@BenGriecoSports) reported the commitment of Madison Shepard who will be wearing the green and gold next season, as the Whitby, Ontario, Canada native will join the Lakers for their fourth season in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League. The 5’ 7” forward played for the Durham West Junior Lightning in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, the same league that the London Junior Devilettes play in. This team faced the Lakers in an exhibition game this past season, where Oswego lost 0-4 on home ice. The Lakers have spent the past 6 seasons beginning with a PWHL opponent coming to play inside the Marano Campus Center. The Lightning finished in 15th this past season and lost to the Stoney Creek Sabres in the opening round of the PWHL Playoffs, losing the series 3-1. Shepard would tally one goal in the four playoff games. Over the course of the regular season, the left handed shot would tally 8 points (3 goals & 5 assists) in 32 games played. Shepard spent the previous two seasons with the Whitby Wolves, spending most of the 2017-18 season with the group’s Midget AA team. During her time in the league, Shepard has recorded a career total of 17 points (7 goals & 10 assists) in 74 contests.

With three forwards getting added to the current list, Oswego State now has 13 forwards heading into the 2020-21 season. Compared to the beginning of the 2019-20 campaign, the team would still need to add one more forwards to equal their total of 15 forwards of their prior season. The Lakers still have four defenseman as the group has not yet recruited any defensive players. WTOP 10 will continue to deliver updates on both the Men’s and Women’s hockey teams heading into next season. Their 2020-21 schedules should be released around the middle of July.

Oswego State Women’s Hockey 2020-2021 Roster Update #3 (6/24/20)

OSWEGO, NY — The Women’s Hockey team continues to recruit talent as the team closes in on their 2020-21 season. After the announcement that new Interim Head Coach Mark Digby would be taking over the group, effectively immediately, the team has been continuing to add to their recruitment class. Prior to these newer commitments, Oswego was able to secure 6 players to throw on the green and gold for the first time next year. With all of these players being a part of the Class of 2024, the team is sure to have a large underclassman presence as the sophomore class has five notable players that were able to make impacts during their freshman campaign. With three goaltenders in this group, the Lakers have already taken care of the hole left in between the pipes after Rachel Farmer graduated, and Tia Trovato transferred to Potsdam. These three will be fighting for the starting job come October. The other three players will be joining the offense as the team is trying to add to their current group of 11 forwards that will most likely be returning next season.

The depth chart above shows the current projected 2020-21 roster. The purple coloring represents the two transfers, while the green represents the Class of 2024 recruits. Black is players that are expected to be back next season.

The most recent announcements surfaced on social media last week with a total of three players committing to Oswego State. The first player, joining the Class of 2024, was Kamryn Barnes, from Alexandria Bay, New York. The 5′ 6″ defenseman graduated from Alexandria Bay Central High School this past year, a town located roughly one hour and 30 minutes northeast of Oswego along Lake Ontario. Barnes was the captain of her high school team her senior year, and also played varsity soccer during the fall. The athlete will join the four other defenseman returning in the fall, and is currently slotted in the Top-6 due to the lack of defenseman. This knowledge was found on Instagram by WTOP 10 Sports Talent Thomas Turgeon (@Turgeon_30wtop).

The two other commitments were rather significant for the Lakers compared to the past commitments of incoming freshman. Last week, Taylor Hudon and Lauren Jones announced that they will be transferring from Nazareth College to join the Lakers in the 2020-21 season. Both players spent the past two seasons with the Golden Flyers and will be juniors next season as the two put on green and gold on for the first time. Lauren Jones, a defenseman from Syracuse, New York, played for Skaneateles High School prior to the start of her collegiate career, the same school where current Oswego State player Meg Teachout played in high school. The two were teammates for two seasons while playing in Section III. Jones played in one game this past season for Nazareth, recording zero points. Her freshman year, the player tallied 5 points (1 goal & 4 assists) in 26 games played. Taylor Hudon will also be joining the Lakers squad next season as the forward played 4 games last season for the Golden Flyers, recording one goal. Hudon, from Alexandria Bay, New York, played in 26 games her freshman campaign, tallying 20 points (15 goals & 5 assists) along with 8 penalty minutes. The player has spent time on defense while she played in high school, but I would expect her to continue in the offensive core for the Lakers. Both players played a combined 5 games for Nazareth last season, both being healthy scratches for a majority of the campaign. This information has been confirmed via Instagram.

After these three players join the 2020-21 roster, Oswego State has now recruited a total of 9 players. Moving forward, the coaching staff will look to continue to grow this group by obtaining more offensive and defensive players. The defensive core still has some gaps to fill with only 6 reported players set in the 2020-21 roster. Women’s Hockey Season Recap

PLATTSBURGH, NY — Women’s Hockey faced off against the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Saturday in the NEWHL championship game. Oswego would get on the board first to get on the board thanks to a shot from Philomena Teggart. This however would not last as the Cardinals would net two to take the lead heading into the second period. Plattsburgh would score four more to secure another NEWHL championship and secure their bid into the NCAA Division III Women’s Hockey tournament. This loss ends Oswego’s season as the Lakers finished with an overall record of 16-7-4. These 16 wins ties their win total from the 2016-2017 season as the Lakers were apart of the ECHC West conference for the final time that season.

Oswego was led by freshman Megan Teachout tallied 29 points, 13 goals and 16 assists, in her 27 games played this season. Graduating senior Eryn Stewart finished right behind the NEWHL Rookie of the Year as Stewart secured 23 points to put her career total of 59 points in 105 games played of her four years as a Laker. The Lakers will lose a total of four seniors as their only goaltender will also graduate, Rachel Farmer. Farmer played a total of 40 games for the Lakers over the course of two seasons as she finished with 1.98 goals against average with a .926 save percentage in her career. Moving forward, there is a question in net heading into next season, but the Lakers have plenty of time to fill the holes that may be left from the seniors. Oswego will kick off their 2020-2021 season in October.

Women’s Hockey moves on in NEWHL Playoffs

OSWEGO, NY — Women’s Hockey battled the Morrisville Mustangs Tuesday afternoon in the Marano Campus Center in the first round of the NEWHL playoffs. The Lakers defeated the Mustangs 1-0 and will advance to play Plattsburgh in the finals. Senior Eryn Stewart scored the lone goal for the Lakers as the forward tipped a shot from Philomena Teggart on the power play in the second period. Oswego held on for the remainder of the contest as goaltender Rachel Farmer recorded the shutout as the netminder saved 22 shots.

Oswego now looks ahead to Plattsburgh as the group will go on the road on Saturday to North Country. Plattsburgh, the number one team in the nation, defeated Cortland 3-0 this past weekend. The Lakers are definitely looking for an upset as the two teams will face off at 3 p.m. in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Marano Campus Center Ice Rink Melts

OSWEGO, NY — As playoffs are upon us at SUNY Oswego for both the Men’s and Women’s Hockey teams, this week has been a challenge for both along with other groups that call the Marano Campus Center Ice Rink their home. Tuesday Evening, reports from individuals that cover both teams like Ben Grieco, from the Oswegonian, tweeted about the ice chilling system failing at the ice rink. The compressor in the system broke, resulting in the ice surface beginning to melt. Wednesday morning, the ice crew began removing the ice due to the ice melting. Currently, all that lies in the rink is the concrete bottom as we wait for updates on the situation. This problem has many implications, as teams are starting to prepare for this weekend’s playoff games.

Women’s Hockey is set to host Morrisville on Saturday for the first round of the NEWHL playoffs. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. as the two seed is looking to secure a win, a most likely move on to play Plattsburgh in the finals. Men’s Hockey is supposed to host the highest remaining seed as quarter final games are being played on Wednesday. This game is set to play at 7 p.m. from the Marano Campus Center. Due to the current standing of the rink, these games may get moved to a new location so that games can be played at the correct times. Although all of this is not confirmed yet, Oswego Athletics has begun looking at possible options for these games, most likely being a place in Syracuse that has the capacity for two college games.

Even though both of these teams are affected the most from this problem, other teams are feeling the results. The D1 ACHA Hockey team has had to move practices to a new location as the team is preparing for their playoffs this weekend in Buffalo. The Women’s Club team has also had to cancel practice for this week.
