Oswego, NY – Entrepreneur and Co-Founder of the Malala Fund, Shiza Shahid spoke to members of the Oswego State community on Mar. 1. Her talk is part of the “I am Oz” diversity speaker series.

Shahid spoke on current gender and women’s rights issues as well as the role we have in society. She shared her story and the inspiration behind the Malala Fund.

“As people really started to resonate with the stories, we realized we should direct that energy toward something they can do to make a difference,” Shahid said. “That’s when the idea to create an organization came to be.”

She shared the fact that America is #52 in the global gender rankings, falling behind to countries like Muwanda. There are a number of ways in which America has a shockingly low position among protecting, enabling and empowering woman.

“America given that it is the wealthiest country in the world, it has significant challenges and in some respects, is a terrible place to be a woman,” she said.

She encourages both men and women to get involved, build relationships, and redesign the way many people think of gender inequality.

Lakers Hold Off RIT

Oswego found themselves down early in the game as they trailed 3-1. They would respond though with a 9-0 run led by Toni Laneve and Brigid Regin. While it seemed at times the Lakers would seal the game, the Tigers kept clawing their way back in it. RIT outscored Oswego by four goals in the second half but fell just short.

Regin led all scorers with a game-high five goals while Laneve added a hat trick. Oswego’s Teresa Shattuck played a part in seven of the team’s scores with three goals and four assists.

Both teams seemed evenly matched throughout the contest as the Lakers went into the final quarter with a 7-5 lead. Oswego, led by freshman Robbie Connors, scored six goals in the fourth to secure the win. He finished with five points in his Laker debut while also winning 16 of 25 face-offs. Oswego had plenty of scorers as a total of seven Lakers scored at least two points apiece.

Goalie Kevin O’Donnell stopped 11 saves for Oswego to earn the win.

The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday as they open their road trip against Ithaca at 4 pm.

The Lakers did not take long to score as Kamryn Sherman found the back of the net less than a minute into the game. She was one of eight Oswego players to have a goal during the contest. Along with the team’s high powered offense, the defense did not allow Morrisville to take a lead at any point.

Toni Laneve shined for Oswego, scoring five goals to go along with three assists. She finished with a career-high eight points. Montana Garrett, Gemma O’Kane and Brigid Regin each tallied three scores apiece.

Oswego will return to action at Laker Turf Stadium on Monday at 4 pm against RIT.

On his senior day, Josh Ivey gave Oswego the start they were looking for. Ivey scored 11 of the team’s first 14 points and played a pivotal role as the Lakers took a eight point lead into halftime. Geneseo fought back in the second half though as they went on a 15-4 run to erase the deficit. It would be short lived as Jamir Ferebee led Oswego on a 11-0 run of their own to secure the victory.

The seniors were the star performers for the Lakers as Ivey had a career high 22 points and six rebounds. Ian Schupp (13) and Ferebee (10) also reached double-figures in points.

Oswego and Geneseo will meet again on Tuesday in Geneseo at 7 pm. The winner of the contest will move on to the second round of the SUNYAC Championship.

Lakers Earn Win on Senior Day

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team beat Potsdam 4-2 on Saturday. With the victory, the Lakers finish out their regular season with a 11-12-2 overall record and 7-8-1 in SUNYAC play. The Bears drop to 12-11-2 overall.

During a busy first period for both teams, the Lakers took only four minutes to get on the scoreboard. Natalie Giglio was credited with the goal off an assist from Olivia Ellis. Potsdam scored the next two goals but that would be all that got past Oswego’s Mariah Madrigal for the remainder of the game. She stopped 25 shots during her time in the net.

Tied at two after one period, Oswego dominated on the offensive side of the puck. The team tacked on another two goals off the sticks of Philomena Teggart and Sarah Grupp.

Oswego will begin play in the NEWHL Championship next Saturday against Buffalo State. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 pm in Buffalo.

Lakers Fall to Rival in Final Minutes

The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team lost against their rival, Plattsburgh, on Saturday night. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 18-5-2 overall and 13-2-1 in conference action while the Cardinals move to 13-11-1 on the season.

Oswego had their chances on offense throughout the game as they outshot the Cardinals 35-10. However, the stellar play of Plattsburgh goalie, Jimmy Poreda, derailed any momentum the Lakers seemed to have. Oswego’s best chance came in the third period when David Ferreira sent a shot into the crossbar of Plattsburgh’s goal.

While the Lakers were efficient at killing power plays, the opposite could be said about their power play offense. Oswego went 0-6 on the night and has failed to capitalize in their past 16 opportunities. The team has also been held scoreless for two consecutive games.

Oswego will look to get back in the win column next Saturday as they host the SUNYAC playoffs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.

Lakers Come Up Short Against Brockport

The Oswego State men’s basketball team suffered a 69-67 loss against Brockport Friday night. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 12-12 on the season and 9-8 in the conference while the Golden Eagles move to 18-6.

Oswego struggled on offense in the first half, shooting just 1-of-9 from three point range and 25% from the field. Those struggles along with Brockport shooting 56% from beyond the arc led to the Golden Eagles taking an eleven point lead into halftime. The Lakers would find themselves within a single possession in the second half but were unable to capitalize.

Jamir Ferebee led the Lakers’ comeback effort with 22 points including 15 in the second half. Tyler Pierre contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds to earn a double double.

Oswego will close out the regular season on Saturday against Geneseo at 3:00 pm. As part of Senior Day, the team will honor Ferebee, Ivey, Schupp and Louis Avellino.

Aside from a power play goal from Potsdam in the first period, the game consisted of only chances. The Lakers outshot the Bears 42-20 but were unable to find the back of the net mainly due to the play of Potsdam’s goalie, Brendan McMeninmen. Max Novick led Oswego with a career high 10 shots.

The SUNYAC’s leader in goals against average and save percentage, David Richer, stopped 19 shots for the Lakers.

Oswego will have its regular season finale tomorrow against Plattsburgh in their annual Whiteout Game at 7:00 pm. The team will also honor its three seniors including captain Mitch Herlihey as part of Senior Day.

Oswego battled Brockport throughout the first half keeping their turnovers to a minimum. The Lakers had just three in the first half and eleven total which was significantly lower than their conference leading 19.4 turnovers per game. Brockport’s Schyler Laux would change the momentum of the game as she scored eleven points in the second half. She finished with a game high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles sealed the deal with a dominant performance as they held the Lakers to just five points in the fourth quarter.

Courtney Ameele led the Lakers with a team high 14 points while Zana Dillard and Rachael Windhausen left their mark on the defensive end. The two each had 11 rebounds with Windhausen also setting a career high with six blocks.

With the victory, the Lakers clinch the third seed in the NEWHL and move to 10-11-2 overall as well as 6-7-1 in conference action. The Red Dragons drop to 7-14-2 on the season.

Cortland was able to get on the board first when Katie DeVoe slapped one into the back of the net during the second period. It would not take Oswego long to answer though as Jean-Marie Padden was able to send a ricocheting puck past Cortland’s goalie, Rachael Farmer, just five minutes later.

In the third period, the Lakers’ offense was dominant with Olivia Ellis scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Ellis would later assist on the goals from Kate Randazzo and Julieann White.

Cortland’s Farmer played all but 36 seconds in goal while recording 35 saves. Oswego’s Mariah Madrigal spent the entire game in net and stopped 14 shots.

The Lakers will return to action on Friday as they travel to Potsdam to take on the Bears. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.

Lakers Win a Thriller Against Blue Devils

The Oswego State men’s basketball team defeated Fredonia on Saturday in thrilling fashion by a score of 76-73. With the win, the Lakers move to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in conference play while the Blue Devils drop to 4-19. The victory marks the first time that Oswego has had a winning record since January 6th.

Oswego’s offense started out hot as they scored the first six points of the contest. From there, it would be back and forth with Fredonia taking a three point lead into halftime. While it seemed as though the Blue Devils would pull away at times, Jamir Ferebee and the Lakers would find answers. Ferebee played a crucial role in the final quarter, hitting three key free throws to put the Lakers up by one with just under four minutes remaining. He was also able to get the assist on Tyler Pierre’s game-winning basket with less than 10 seconds in the game.

Ian Schupp led the Lakers with 25 points and was joined by Ferebee (18), Pierre (13) and Josh Ivey (10) in scoring double digits.

Oswego will face Brockport at home next Friday with tip off scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Lakers Suffer Loss Against Fredonia

The Oswego State women’s basketball team fell to Fredonia on Saturday by a score of 66-50. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 7-16 overall and 4-12 in conference play while the Blue Devils improve to 9-15 on the season.

The two teams appeared to be evenly matched as they ended the first quarter tied at 16. Fredonia’s Jenna Einick changed that as she was able to dominate against Oswego’s weak defense, scoring 16 points in the first half. She would finish with a game high 25 points. As a team, the Blue Devils shot 59.3% from the field during that span.

Oswego was able to cut the deficit to single digits at times in the second half but Fredonia had the answers. This was largely in part to their ability to score off turnovers as they outscored the Lakers 26-8. Oswego finished the game with 19 turnovers while Fredonia finished with 15.

Courtney Ameele (17) was one of three Lakers that scored in double digits along with Rachael Windhausen (11) and Erin Gantley (10).

Jamir Ferebee led the team with a game high 18 points during that span and finished with 22 points.

Oswego maintained a balanced scoring attack for the second consecutive game as Tyler Pierre (13), Josh Ivey (12) and Liam Sanborn (11) joined Ferebee in scoring double digits. Along with 13 points, Pierre also collected 13 rebounds giving the junior his fifth double double of the season.

The Lakers will face Fredonia in a SUNYAC matchup on Saturday as they try to move over .500 for the first time since January 6th. Tip off is scheduled for 4 pm.

Herlihey Scores 100th Point in Win Over Geneseo

The fourth ranked Oswego State men’s hockey team defeated seventh ranked Geneseo 4-2 on Friday in what was a crucial SUNYAC matchup. With the win, the Lakers move to 17-3-2 overall while also clinching home-ice advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Knights drop to 15-5-3 on the season.

Oswego came out strong on the offensive end in the beginning of the game scoring three goals. One of the scores came from Mitch Herlihey, off of an assist from Josh Zizek. The assist was Zizek’s team-leading 17th of the season. Geneseo’s top-five nationally ranked offense would not go down easily though as they cut the Lakers’ lead to just one in the final period. With 19 seconds remaining, Oswego put the game away on Herlihey’s empty net goal. The goal secured the senior captain a spot in the 100 point club making him the 56th Laker to reach the milestone.

Oswego will look to extend their winning streak tomorrow when they travel to Brockport for their last away matchup of the regular season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 pm.

The Bengals move to 9-13 overall and 6-10 in the SUNYAC while also snapping a four game losing streak.

Oswego guard Courtney Ameele led all Lakers in scoring with 15 points despite her shooting just 4-for-23 from the field. Senior Zana Dillard had a team-high 5 assists and 16 rebounds.

The Lakers will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday against conference foe Fredonia. Tip off is scheduled for 2 pm.

With the tie, the Lakers are now 8-11-2 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play while the Cardinals move to 17-2-2 on the season and 11-0-1 in the NEWHL. The game also marks the first time Oswego has not lost to Plattsburgh at home.

After allowing five goals in the first period Friday night, the Lakers defense held Plattsburgh to a single shot for the first ten minutes of the contest. During that time, Olivia Ellis scored her team leading seventh goal of the season to give Oswego an early lead. The Cardinals were able to fight their way back into the game with multiple power play opportunities due to the Lakers’ miscues. On the brink of defeat, Oswego’s Victoria Blake sent the puck sailing past the leg of Plattburgh’s goalie, Brooke Wolejko to tie the game up with just 17 seconds left.

The Lakers will head to Cortland on Friday as part of a home and home series. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 pm.

Ellis Notches 100th Point in Loss

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team fell to their rival, Plattsburgh, by a final score of 6-2 on Friday night. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 8-11-1 overall and 4-7-0 in NEWHL play. The Cardinals move to 17-2-1 on the season and remain a perfect 11-0 in the conference.

It would not take long for Plattsburgh to get the scoring action started as Kayla Meneghin sent one into the back of the net just three minutes into the game. The Lakers would respond as their top two leaders in assists, Kate Randazzo and Olivia Ellis, fed Julieann White the puck for the power play goal to tie it up at one. The rest of the first period would be dominated by Cardinal scores as Plattsburgh put up four unanswered to take the lead 5-1.

In the third period, Oswego’s captain Ellis, made history as she joined the school’s 100 point club with her second assist of the night. She is the program’s leader for career points as well as goals (39) and assists (61). This also marked the fifth game of the season where the captain has accumulated multiple points.

The Lakers and Cardinals will face off for the final time this season at Saturday with puck drop scheduled at 3 pm.

Hamilton’s Power Plays Haunt Lakers

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team lost to the Hamilton Continentals by a score of 3-0. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 5-7 overall while also seeing their two game win streak come to an end. The Continentals move to 5-2 on the season.

Offensively, Oswego mustered only 16 shots with three of their defensemen, Natalie Giglio, Madison Byrne and Philomena Teggart each putting up two. On the few scoring opportunities the team did have though, they could not capitalize as they missed open looks and pucks in front of the net.

Penalties and power play opportunities decided the outcome between these two teams with Hamilton making the best of their chances. Of the three goals scored by the Continentals, all three came on the power play.

With the Lakers’ starting goalie Mariah Madrigal still day-to-day with an injury, Amber Samonek played the entire game in net, stopping 22 shots. Continentals’ Sam Walther continued her dominant play shutting out her opponent for the third consecutive game.

Oswego will be back in action on January 7, 2018 when they take on Utica College at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 pm.

Lakers Men’s Basketball Wins Home Opener

The Oswego State men’s basketball team won their home opener against the Oneonta Red Dragons by a score of 47-41 on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Lakers move to 2-4 overall with a 1-1 conference record while the Red Dragons drop to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC.

In the beginning of the first half, Oswego got off to a hot start led by Tim Marshall’s three pointers. Shortly after, things would go south for the team as their two leading scorers, Ian Schupp and Jamir Farabee struggled to muster any kind of offense. The two’s struggles led to Oneonta taking a 12-0 run into halftime to put themselves up by eight.

Oswego turned it around in the second half after Liam Sanborn and Schupp each hit a three. While there were times that Oneonta could seal the game, they struggled to make shots in the paint. It ended up costing the Red Dragons as Oswego outscored them 22-7 during the final ten minutes of the game. Josh Ivey shined for the Lakers, making timely free throws as well as securing a defensive rebound with just seconds remaining in the game. He finished with a team high nine points to go along with six rebounds.

The Lakers will travel to Buffalo State on Friday to take part in their third straight conference game. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Meanwhile, Brockport drops to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the SUNYAC.

The first period did not result in a score by either team with defense playing a prominent role. However, Oswego was able to find the back net early in the second period as Aaron Huffnagle connected with Cameron Berry for the score. The goal had additional meaning with it leading to teddy bears being launched onto the ice for the annual Teddy Bear Toss. After a count, it was announced that 736 bears were collected for donation.

In the third period, the Lakers looked to extend their lead and they did with Joseph Molinaro sending a slapshot past Brockport goalie, Matt Schneider. This would not be the highlight of the period though as physicality between both teams was at a high. For the second straight home game, the Lakers saw one of the members of the opposing team earn a five minute major penalty as well as an ejection. With momentum on their side, Oswego was able to seal the win with a last second empty net goal by Mitch Herlihey.
