BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers traveled west on the thruway to take on the Buffalo State Bengals Wednesday afternoon. The action started early in this matchup as the Lakers scored twice before the second minute of the game. The first goal came off the foot of Kieran Gilroy a minute and twenty-two seconds into the game. Just thirteen seconds later Liam Rothar would score giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Chris Smith. The action didn’t stop there. Ten minutes later Buffalo State cut the Lakers lead in half. No other goals in the first half. Oswego goalie Matt D’Arpino made two saves in the first.

The second half didn’t have any goals, but did see plenty of action. The 66th minute saw competing red cards. Oswego’s Matthew Sprague and Buffalo State’s Ayden Cristales each received red cards causing both teams to go down ten men. Oswego would receive two more yellows in the game, with the Bengals receiving one. The game ended 2-1. Despite the win, the Lakers ended up being out shot 16-8, and outshot in shots-on-goal 5-3. Matt D’Arpino ended the game with a total of four saves.

The Lakers are now 5-6-2 (2-3-2 SUNYAC) and have 8 points. They are sitting sixth in the SUNYAC, the final playoff spot.

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego Men’s soccer team took to the Laker Turf Saturday afternoon to open their conference schedule. The Fredonia Blue Devils travelled east to take on the Lakers. Action on the field started fast, in just the fourth minute a header off a Blue Devils corner kick got past Oswego keeper Matt D’Arpino to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead. Only thirty seconds after the goal, the Lakers made their chances of winning that much harder. Liam Rothar would pick up a red card and drop Oswego down to 10 men for the next 85 minutes of game action. In the seventeenth minute Oswego’s Kyle Genrich single handedly brought the game to a tie. He would steal a pass between two defenders and be one on one with the goalie. He would place it in the bottom left corner, even though Fredonia’s goalie got finger tips on it, and the game would be tied at one. From then until the end of the half the the action slowed down a lot, and the team’s went to the half tied. 

The second half of the game was much like the second half of the the first half, as lot of possession in the mid-field and back and forth, but no real chances on goal. A yellow card for Fredonia in the 61st minute drew the ire of the crowd who wanted the refs to give a straight red as they had earlier in the game. In the final ten minutes of the game, the teams started to pick up the pace once more. With seven to go in the game, Kyle Gehrich put one on goal from outside the 18 yard box, forcing a save from the keeper. From then on it was all Fredonia. They would keep the ball on the Oswego defensive half for the final six minutes. The Blue Devils got off six shots on four corner kicks but the defense held strong, and D’Arpino had a few key saves to keep the game tied at one. Gehrich was Oswego’s leading shot taker on the day with three, all being on goal. Matt D’Arpino would finish the day with three saves.

Both team’s would walk away with a single point for the standings, as under the new point system in the SUNYAC, a draw gives each team a point, a win gives three points, and a loss gives none. The point system only applies to SUNYAC matchups. The Lakers are now 2-3-1 (0-0-1 SUNYAC). The Lakers next matchup is against SUNY Brockport on Wednesday September 21 at 4:00 P.M. in Brockport.

The Oswego State Men’s Soccer team lost to the Hamilton Continentals 2-0. Kyle Hanner and Kieran Gilroy both had three shots on goal each and the Lakers defense held it’s own for most of the game. The Lakers and Continentals had exchanged many shots with Oswego having six and Hamilton with five in the first half. Gilroy was the leader for the Lakers in the first half as he had three shots on goal but was unable to score a goal.

As the game went into the second half, the Lakers defense once held its own for a while. Hamilton was able to take advantage of Oswego as the Continentals had out-shot the Lakers 12-6 in the second half which proved to be the difference maker in the game. The Continentals would break the scoring drought as they scored their first goal of the game in the 63:22 mark of the game. Three minutes later, the Continentals would score their second goal of the game. Kyle Tanner  and Kieran Gilroy led the team in shots with three a piece. Oswego Goalkeeper Matt D’Arpino had three saves in the game while also allowing the two goals.

The Lakers are now 1-2 on the season. They will travel south to Ithaca to take on the Blue Bombers on Sunday, September 11th at the Carp Wood Field.
