Men’s Hockey splits high ranked opening weekend

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers men’s hockey team took to both road and home ice this weekend for the first official games of their season. The weekend started with a Friday night trip to Geneva, NY to take on the Hobart Statesmen, followed by a Saturday night matchup in the Deb against the Elmira Soaring Eagles. The opening weekend was a real test for the Lakers as both squads they faced were ranked higher than them in the uscho preseason poll, Hobart #5 and Elmira #9.

The game started off pretty even for both the Lakers and the Statesmen as they each would get shots off on each others goalies. An early Hobart penalty gave the Lakers their first real opportunity for a goal all season, but the Statesmen killed it and only allowed a single shot on the net during the two minutes. Not even a minute later, Conor Smart would be called for hooking giving Hobart their first chance of the season and they would capitalize. Halfway through the penalty Hobart would score giving them the 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the contest. Oswego would be called for another penalty with eight minutes left, but net-minder Eric Green would save two shots and keep the Statesmen from extending their lead. Green finished the period with six saves.

Hobart came out of the gates swinging in the second half, getting four shots off in the first minute of play. It was Oswego who scored first in the period though. A Connor Sleeth face-off win would go back to Ryan Dickinson who passed the puck to Quinn Warmuth who buried the puck in the back of the net from the blue line. It was a very chippy period for both teams, each receiving three penalties, at one point, there was only a 3v3 on the ice. The Statesmen recovered from the 3v3 first and actually got themselves back to full strength 5v3, where they would score twice. The second period ended 3-1 Statesmen. Green had another 14 saves in the period.

It only took 11 seconds for Hobart to extend their lead in the final period, winning the opening face-off and quickly moving down ice to make it 4-1. The Lakers would hold them off for a while in the third, but with just under six minutes left the Statesmen struck again, extending it to 5-1. Oswego would pull one back on the power-play. Tommy Cahill scored, assisted by Matt McQuade. Hobart out-shot the Lakers in the contest 59-43 and dominated on the powerplay, scoring on 3-4 chances. Eric Green had 32 saves in the game. Connor Sleeth led the Lakers in shots with six and was 17-29 in the face-off circle.

The Lakers were back in the Deborah. F. Stanley ice arena Saturday night for their official home opener and the Teal Night Game. The Teal Night game for both the men’s and women’s teams raises awareness for Ovarian Cancer and takes donations for Ovarian Research in memory of the late Mary Gosek. For more information you go can to http://peacefulremediesoswego.com The Lakers were wearing their teal jerseys for the game against Elmira. The first goal of the game was in favor of the Lakers. A pass from Connor Sleeth back to the blue line to Shane Bull, usually a forward but was filling in on defense for the game, buried one past the goalie just before the half way mark in the first period. A little more than two minutes later the Soaring Eagles were called for holding and went a man down. With the Lakers on the power play, Matt McQuade brought the puck up the right side passed it off to Connor Sleeth who put it over the goalies shoulder for the Lakers second goal of the game. The Lakers put 22 shots on net in the first period.

The Lakers came out soaring in the second period, scoring 19 seconds in. Daniel Colabufo shooting one across his body and across the goal to give Oswego a 3-0 lead. Tommy Cahill got the assist. It was again the Lakers adding to their lead, halfway through the second frame. Coming off a face-off win by Ben Addison went back to Shane Bull. Bull passed it to Tommy Cahill who sent it pass the goalie. A penalty with five minutes to go gave Elmira their first scoring opportunity, and they took advantage of it. On a two-man advantage, they put on past goalie Richie Parent, who got the start in net. The Lakers had five players with two points by the end of the period.

In the final frame, the Lakers kept pushing the pace and scored again just under four minutes in. Tommy Cahill shot it low off the goalies blocker on a two-on-two opportunity and Daniel Colabufo took the rebound and scored for his second of the game. Another Lakers penalty allowed the Soaring Eagles to score the final goal of the game. Again with a two-man advantage, they put one past Parent for their second goal of the game and the final one of the game. Colabufo led the team with two goals, three different Lakers were credited with two goals. Seven different Lakers had two points. Richie Parent had 15 saves on the game. Elmira was two for three on the Powerplay during the game.  This was the Lakers first point against a ranked opponent since February, 2019 when they tied a then ranked #2 Geneseo.

Oswego is now 1-1 this season. They jumped up to #10 in the uscho poll after the weekend. They have a big weekend ahead, opening SUNYAC play with Whiteout weekend. They take on Plattsburgh on Friday, puck drop set for 7:00, WTOP10 will have a hour long pregame show, going live at 6:00 P.M. The Potsdam Bears come to town on Saturday, puck drop set for 7:00 P.M.

Lakers Advance to Second Round of SUNYAC Tournament

OSWEGO, NY – The Women’s Soccer team put on an impressive performance against the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Saturday in an upset win 1-0 in overtime to advance to the second round of the SUNYAC Tournament.

The first half of the game was a defensive battle between both teams. Oswego was only able to get one shot which came from Brianna Winkler. Plattsburgh managed to get five shots off during the first half with Perri Anderson recording one save. Plattsburgh had recorded five shots during the first half with two coming from both Nicole Kingsley and Kirsten Villemaire. Villemaire would finish the day with a game-leading five shots for the Cardinals.

In the second half, the Cardinals had 14 shots and Oswego would record eight. Lugina Serrao would lead the Lakers on the day with three shots. The Lakers would finish with ten shots with six being shots on goal while Plattsburgh had ten shots with five being shots on goal. Anderson in the second half would record three more saves as she finished the day with four saves. The game would go into overtime at 0-0 where in the early stages of overtime no one could score. Plattsburgh missed a chance to end the game on a 1:1 opportunity as Anderson made an incredible save to prevent a Cardinals win. The Lakers were able to capitalize off a corner kick that Graisa Madden was able to get into the net as Amber McDermott made a huge assist for the Lakers to secure a 1-0 overtime win against the Cardinals.

The Lakers will travel to Cortland on Wednesday, November 2 at Fred T. Holloway Field at 1 PM to face off against the Red Dragons in the second round of the SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers will be looking to make up for their loss against Cortland earlier this season. They will be looking for their first win against Cortland since the 2018 season. This marks the second time in seven years that the Lakers have made it to the second round of the SUNYAC Tournament dating back to 2015 when they lost to Oneonta 2-1.

Lakers field hockey wins season finale

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – The Oswego state field hockey team won their regular season finale over Morrisville on the Laker turf Wednesday. Oswego started out the contest strong offensively starting with a Kacie Simzer goal just over 2 minutes into the contest. The Lakers would receive several penalty corners following the goal in the first quarter. Oswego kept their foot on the gas through the rest of the first and had 7 shots in the first half compared to the mustangs 0. Kacie Simzer would quickly strike again for the Lakers, just over 2 minutes into the second quarter assisted by Megan Delaney. Oswego was able to keep the pressure on with several penalty corners. That  eventually led to another goal at the 28 minute mark from Kacie Simzer who would get a hat trick on the day, recording her third goal of the afternoon with an assist from Kate Mcnally. Following another corner for the Lakers, Kate Mcnally was able to get one of her own scoring the fourth goal for the Lakers right before the end of the first half. The Lakers closed out the first half with a dominant performance, getting 20 shots off against the Mustangs. Oswego had 13 corners in the first half of play which allowed Oswego to hold a 4-0 lead at the half.

   Oswego would continue their high scoring affair through the start of the third quarter, adding another goa just 4 minutes into play  by Kaitlyn Ahle assisted by Nancy Pagliaroli. The Lakers controlled the third quarter continuing to allow no opportunities for the Mustangs. Kaitlyn Mastracco was able to get in on the action and she scored the sixth goal on the day for the Lakers, scoring just over 3 minutes into the fourth quarter. Kacie Simzer would continue her great day recording her fourth goal of the afternoon with just under 10 minutes remaining in play. Simzer tied her career high for goals, and also tied the school record yet again. Oswego would finish the contest allowing 0 shots against Erica Scheblein and attempting 34 shots on offense.

The Lakers finished off their season with an 8-8 record, and also recorded their first SUNYAC win, giving them a 1-5 conference record on the year. Heather Moore finishes her final game as the Lakers coach with a win in a position she held for 6 seasons

Lakers Field Hockey Shut Out by Knights

GENESEO, NY- It was a rough game for the Lakers as they were shut out by the Geneseo Knights 3-0.

It was a quiet first quarter for about 10 minutes for both teams. Geneseo would get on the board first as Maggie Phipps would score her 8th goal of the season as she was assisted by Cassidy Sturdevant. Phipps would score her second goal of the game in the second quarter and 2:30 seconds later Katrina Clare would score to put the Knights up 3-0 at the half. Geneseo would outshoot the Lakers 7-1 at the half. Erica Scheblein would record 2 saves in the half.

Geneseo would continue to put the pressure on the Lakers in the third quarter, but Scheblein would not let up as she did not allow a single goal for the rest of the game. The Knights would record 4 shots in the first six minutes of the quarter. Geneseo’s stout defense would prevent Oswego from recording a single shot in the third quarter. Oswego would finally record a shot in the second half but Kaitlyn Ahle’s shot was blocked by Geneseo’s defense. Scheblein would record a total of 11 saves in the game. The Lakers were dominated in almost every category by the Knights. The Lakers would only record 2 shots compared to Geneseo’s 17, and Geneseo would record 16 shots on the goal while the Lakers were only able to get 1 throughout the entire game.

The Lakers face off against the Morrisville Mustangs on Wednesday, October 26th at 4 PM at Laker Turf Stadium in their season finale. The Lakers will look to finish the regular season with a bounce-back win as they take on a Mustangs team who’s 1-4 on the road this season.

Oswego women’s soccer secures SUNYAC playoff spot

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.  – The Oswego State Women’s Soccer team faced off against the New Paltz Hawks on Saturday afternoon. This game was an important one for the Lakers as they were looking to get into one of the last SUNYAC playoff spots. Oswego would take control to start the first half of the matchup in what was a relatively quiet half of play. That was until Amber Mcdermott Scored first for the Lakers, unassisted at the 29:02 mark to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The Lakers held the advantage in the first half beating New Paltz in shots 5-2 and would take a 1-0 lead after one half of play.

In the second half we saw a momentum switch where New Paltz took over. Shortly into the second half, New Paltz would tie the match at 1 from a goal by Gaby Treble at the 48:56 mark. The Hawks would eventually take the lead over the Lakers halfway through the second half from Addison Weiner at the 69:10 mark to take a 2-1 lead over the Lakers. But the Lakers fought back to tie it as graduate transfer Graisa Madde would score the match’s final point, tying the game at 2 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest. Both teams could get nothing past the goalkeepers for the rest of the game and it would end in a 2-2 tie in Oswego’s last regular season game.

The Lakers finished their season with a record of 8-5-4, and a conference record of 3-3-3. The Lakers will now turn their focus to the playoffs as they will be the fifth seed. Oswego will take on the Plattsburgh Cardinals at Plattsburgh on October 29th at 1PM in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs.

Men’s hockey finishes preseason 2-0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team took to the ice of the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena for the second and final preseason matchup on Saturday. They took on the Carleton Place Canadiens, a junior program, from the Central Canadian Hockey League.

The first period quickly showed the difference between the two sides. Less than six minutes into the first period of play, the Lakers found the scoreboard first, freshman Matt McQuade finding the back of the net for his first unofficial goal as a Laker, as stats don’t count for these games. The assist coming from Connor Sleeth. Less than three minutes later Oswego would find the back of the net again. Garrett Clegg would steal one off of a defenseman at the Lakers offensive blue line and take it himself burying it past the goalie on for an unassisted goal. The first period ended 2-0.

In the second period the Canadiens seemed to hold their own a bit more, but that didn’t stop the Lakers from scoring. With eight minutes to go in the second period the Lakers had beautiful tic-tac-toe style goal. Trent Grimshaw carried the puck across the blue line in a three-on-two opportunity. He sent a pass across to Daniel Colabufo who quickly sent it back across net to a cutting AJ Ryan who buried the goal. The Canadiens would answer though. With three minutes remaining, a breakout chance resulted in a beautiful goal, shooting from right to left and off the bar past net-minder Cal Schell.

In the third period the Lakers turned the after burners back on. Less than four minutes into the period, Tommy Cahill won a face-off in the Lakers offensive zone and sent it back to captain Ryan Bunka who buried it through traffic for the Lakers fourth goal of the game. The Lakers fifth goal was another tic-tac-toe goal that would end with defenseman Troy Robillard deking the goalie and putting it behind him for goal number five. The Lakers sixth and final goal of the game came off the stick of Robillard once again. This time he sniped one from the blue line by his own bench, a one-timer that would go bar-down. This goal coming just nine-minutes into the third period. The Canadiens would pull one goal back before the end of the game making the final score of 6-2.

Oswego starts their regular season play starting next weekend. The Lakers head to Geneva, N.Y. on Friday night to take on the Hobart University Statesmen. Hobart was ranked #5 in the preseason poll, Oswego was ranked #13. On Saturday the Lakers have their home opener on Saturday taking on #9 Elmira university. Lakers soccer get big SUNYAC win on the road

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State Women’s soccer team took a trip out west to Fredonia, New York in a SUNYAC matchup Wednesday night. The Lakers started with possession off the kickoff and made a push downfield right away. Luigina Serrao was able to get a shot off only 3:00 minutes into the game and the Lakers almost took a lead, but the shot was stopped from a great save by Fredonia’s goalkeeper Dani Rubino. Both teams would trade possesion for the next couple minutes and about 6 minutes in Amber McDermott would receive her first yellow card. This gave Fredonia a spark and Talia DeFay would give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead 9:13 in. There would be little action over the next 10 minutes of play before Katie Delgrosso would attempt a shot, barely missing right of the net. Fredonia would then follow that shot with three shots of their own, missing high on two of them, and Perri Anderson saving the other on a day where she would have 2 saves. Oswego would take the pass off of the goal kick, and Brianna Winkler would score her 5th goal of the year and the tying goal of the game assisted by Emma Rechtorovic.(28:23). Oswego would go into halftime tied at 1-1.

Oswego would come out with a fast start in the second half. The Lakers scored their second goal of the game just over 2 minutes into the half. Luigina Serrao would score the game winning goal and her 4th goal of the year, with Rechtorovic recording her second assist of the day. The Lakers would play lock down defense for the rest of the game not allowing Fredonia to get any shots off and controlling the pace of play. The Lakers would escape with a 2-1 win.

Oswego is 8-5-3 (3-3-2 in SUNYAC) while Fredonia falls to 2-8-4 (0-6-2 in SUNYAC). After this win the Lakers move up to 5th place in the SUNYAC as they continue to fight for a playoff spot. The Lakers will close out the regular season with their final conference matchup against New Paltz on Saturday, October 22nd.

Red Dragons Spoil Laker’s Senior Night

OSWEGO, N.Y – The Lakers suffered a tough loss at home during Senior Day as they fell to the Oneonta Red Dragons 1-0. This was the first time the Lakers lost at home this season.

The first half of the game was a defensive battle between the two teams. The first shot of the game would come from Emily Applegate but her shot was blocked by Oneonta’s defense. Immediately after Applegate’s shot was blocked, Lugina Serrao attempted a shot but her shot was blocked as well. Amber McDermott then attempted to shoot the missed shot by Serrao but she would miss. The Lakers recorded four shots during the first half but none were shots on goal.

In the second half, both teams started off slow. There would be 21 throw-ins in just the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Red Dragons would get their first shot in the second half at the 77-minute mark. Oswego would get their first chance to score around the 82-minute mark as Amber McDermott’s shot would be missed high into the air. Oneonta would score the only goal of the game as Gianna Gritzmacher would score the goal for Red Dragons as she was assisted by Tara Nicholson. Both Oneonta and Oswego would record a total of 5 saves during the game. Goalie Perri Anderson would record only one save during the game.

The Lakers face the Fredonia Blue Devils on October 19th at 3 PM at University Stadium. The Lakers are looking to get back in the win column as they have two games remaining this season both of them being SUNYAC matchups.

Lakers Field hockey battles in tough game on senior day

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – The Lakers faced off against the Brockport Golden Eagles in a SUNYAC matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers honored 6 seniors on Saturday including midfielder Megan Delaney, defender Kaitlyn Mastracco, defender Holly Carr, forward Kaitlyn Ahle, Midfielder Kacie Simzer and senior goalkeeper Erica Scheblein. The Lakers started off the game with a strong drive offensively and managed to get a penalty corner in the first 40 seconds of play but they were not able to capitalize. Both teams would remain pretty quiet for the next few minutes, but around the ten minute mark Brockport would pick things up offensively, getting seven shots off in the final five minutes of the first quarter. This would ultimately pay off for the Golden Eagles as Paige Thowe would sneak one past Scheblein on the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead with 3 minutes left in the first.

Oswego would come out with another strong offensive push to start the second quarter, getting another penalty corner less than a minute into play. But Taylin Bauer missed her attempted wide and Kacie Simzer would miss her attempt wide a couple minutes later. The Lakers would have other chances to tie the match at one but were unable to capitalize on opportunities keeping the score at 1-0 going into halftime. Oswego would have only four shots in the first half, only one landing on goal while the Golden Eagles would have 11 shots, and eight on goal. Oswego was more on the offensive attack in third quarter beating Brockport 4-2 in shots on goal.The Lakers had some close chances, with two out of the four shots bouncing off of the crossbar and barely missing the goal.

Brockport’s goalie would be injured on a diving save late in the third, forcing her to exit the game and Brockport having to bring in a freshman goalkeeper. Fortunately, she was able to return at the start of the fourth and played the remainder of the game The Lakers had a few opportunities to tie the gamelate into the fourth off penalty corners and Kaitlyn Mastraco would come the closest but had her shot saved twice by Brockport’s goalie. The Lakers were not able to regroup and would fall 1-0 to Brockport

With 2 games left the Lakers are now 7-7(0-4 SUNYAC) and sit in 7th place in the SUNYAC. The Lakers will now head to Geneseo on October 22nd for a conference matchup against the Knights.

Men’s Hockey opens preseason with win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s hockey team took to home ice for the first time since they beat SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC semi-final last season. A preseason matchup against the Stevenson Mustangs was an opportunity for both teams to get their legs underneath them before they start regular season play in two weeks time.

The first period saw senior Eric Green get the start in goal for the Lakers. Both sides would get shots off on net, but it would be the Mustangs who struck first in the game. Liam McCanney would send one five hole and into the back of the net for the first goal of the season with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Lakers would quickly answer though. A pass from Quinn Warmuth toward the slot, would be deflected in by Tyler Flack for the Lakers first goal with just over nine to go in the period.

The second period was a goalie battle. The Lakers would switch goalies, junior Richie Parent becoming the Lakers net minder in the second period. Parent made a few excellent saves, and showed off his stick handling abilities as a goalie. Stevenson made their goalie change halfway through the second period. All three goalies that played in the period didn’t allow a goal, and the sides went into the second intermission still tied at one.

In the third period, the Lakers gave their third goalie on the roster, new freshman recruit Cal Schell, his first opportunity wearing the green in gold on the ice. Just as Richie Parent had in the second period, he didn’t allow the Mustangs to get one past him, but the Lakers got themselves the lead. Their second goal came less than three minutes in. Coming off a faceoff, a pass went back to Quinn Warmuth in also the same spot as last time by the blue line. He again threw it into the slot, and the puck would go off the skate of Conor Smart and into the back of the net. Oswego’s final goal would come late in the third. Just as Stevenson was pulling their goalie to have a 6-5 and try and tie the game, the Lakers would have a two-on-one opportunity. New transfer Thomas Rocco would pass the puck behind the lone defender to Tyler Flack who just tapped it into the empty net for the game sealing third and final goal.

The Lakers walked away with a victory 3-1 showing good promise before the challenging season ahead. They will play one final preseason game before the start of regular season play. A matchup with Carelton Place of the CCHL on Saturday October, 22 in the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena.

Early action in Men’s Soccer game earns win

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Lakers traveled west on the thruway to take on the Buffalo State Bengals Wednesday afternoon. The action started early in this matchup as the Lakers scored twice before the second minute of the game. The first goal came off the foot of Kieran Gilroy a minute and twenty-two seconds into the game. Just thirteen seconds later Liam Rothar would score giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Chris Smith. The action didn’t stop there. Ten minutes later Buffalo State cut the Lakers lead in half. No other goals in the first half. Oswego goalie Matt D’Arpino made two saves in the first.

The second half didn’t have any goals, but did see plenty of action. The 66th minute saw competing red cards. Oswego’s Matthew Sprague and Buffalo State’s Ayden Cristales each received red cards causing both teams to go down ten men. Oswego would receive two more yellows in the game, with the Bengals receiving one. The game ended 2-1. Despite the win, the Lakers ended up being out shot 16-8, and outshot in shots-on-goal 5-3. Matt D’Arpino ended the game with a total of four saves.

The Lakers are now 5-6-2 (2-3-2 SUNYAC) and have 8 points. They are sitting sixth in the SUNYAC, the final playoff spot.

Field hockey wins on road with big fourth quarter

ROCHESTER, N.Y.  –  The Lakers travelled to Rochester to take on the Nazareth Golden Flyers on Tuesday night in a Oswego 3-1 win. Oswego’s offense would start out swinging in the first quarter with four shots attempted and three shots on goal from Simzer, Darcy and Delaney but none would make it to the back of the goal. The Lakers defense was in control in the first quarter by mostly keeping the ball in midfield which only allowed Nazareth to attempt one shot. Oswego would get their second penalty corner of the evening, just over three minutes into the second quarter (18:06) but the Laker’s were unable to capitalize as the defense by Nazareth didn’t allow Oswego to attempt a shot. Just over five minutes into the second, Nazareth would finally have their first shot on goal but Oswego goalkeeper Erica Scheblein would kick the ball out of bounds and record her first save of the night. The last 8 minutes of the quarter the Lakers were able to get some shots on goal with two coming from Kacie Simzer and one coming from Bryleigh Beauchat. Altogether Oswego would finish the first half with seven shots, four landing on goal with a halftime score of 0-0

At the start of the second half the Golden Flyers decided to make a change with their goalie and Oswego attacked. Oswego would record seven shots in the third quarter with none getting past the fresh new goalie. But all that changed in the fourth quarter when 46 minutes in the scoreless streak broke from a goal from sophomore Kate McNally assisted by Molly Darcy(46:19). The Lakers scored again 5 minutes later(51:37) off of a penalty goal from Kaitlyn Mastracco, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. 15 seconds later Nazareth answered back with a goal from Hannah James(51:52) to bring the Oswego lead to only one. But Nazareth defense couldn’t stop the Lakers as Kacie Simzer would grab another goal for Oswego(55:06) assisted by Taylin Bauer to give the Lakers a 3-1 lead. Nazareth would have chances at the end to score, but the Laker’s defense held up and didn’t allow any more goals for Nazareth to hold on to the win. Oswego out shot Nazareth by a 19-9 margin and Erica Scheblein continues her great season with five saves on the night.

Oswego is now 7-6 on the season. The Lakers will now return home on Saturday for senior day in a conference matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles.

Oswego Mens soccer falls to Plattsburgh in close contest

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – After a close game to all the way till the final seconds, the Oswego Lakers remain winless at home after a tough loss to SUNY Plattsburgh. This rivalry game was a great opportunity for the lakers to get back into the win column with a huge SUNYAC win and it was looking in favor of the Lakers early on as Senior Ryan Young was able to get on the board first for oswego with a ripper of a goal halfway through the first. Unfortunately for the Lakers  this was their first and last goal as Plattsburghs stellar defense was able to shut down the Lakers for the remainder of the game. Despitee a fantastic performance for freshman goalie Andre Bourjolly who was an absolute monster in goal making saves on almost every shot that came its way, Plattsburgh kept pushing the pace and ended up scoring 2 goals minutes apart in the second half. After Plattsburgh took the lead Oswego wasn’t able to bounce back. The Lakers look to get back on track this Wednesday as they go on the road to face the Buff State Bengals.

Women’s Soccer fights out draw

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Women’s soccer team took to the road Wednesday afternoon to take on the Geneseo Knights. Both team’s came into the game in the top four of the SUNYAC standings, with Geneseo three points ahead of the Lakers. It was a quiet first half for both teams. The Lakers only got two shots off in the entire half, one of them being on target. The Knights got seven shots off in the half, four of them between the ninth and twentieth minutes, but only two were on target. Oswego keeper Perri Anderson finished the half with two saves.

The second half of the match was a bit more exciting. Both teams got off five shots, but only one of the ten was on target. Three of the Lakers shots came between the 73rd and 81st minutes, though none of them drew a save from the Geneseo Keeper. A defensive battle ended in a 0-0 tie for both teams, granting each a point in the standings. Anderson would finish the game with three saves. Amber McDermott had the only shot on goal for the Lakers.

The Lakers now sit at 7-3-2 (2-1-1 SUNYAC). They have five games left this season, all against conference opponents. Their next game is Saturday October, 8 in Plattsburgh to take on the Cardinals.

Lakers Fight Tough Against Geneseo

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Men’s Soccer fought tough against their SUNYAC opponent Geneseo in a 2-2 tie. The Lakers started out the first half strong as they had four shots within the first ten minutes of the game.  The Lakers took the lead early in the game with Kieran Gilroy scoring a goal at the 35:57 mark of the first half. Geneseo would finish off the second half strong as they had six shots within the final 20 minutes of the first half.  Oswego had an impressive first half as they had nine total shots.

The Knights would control the tempo of the second half. Geneseo would tie the game as they scored their first goal of the game. The Lakers would answer three minutes later as HaJoon Lee scored for the Lakers to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. The Knights weren’t finished yet though as within about six minutes of the Lakers scoring the Knights scored again tying the game at two a piece. Geneseo outshot Oswego 23-10 during the game. Freshman Goalie Andre Bourjolly had a strong game as he had six saves all coming in the first half. This marks the first time that the Lakers have tied with the Geneseo Knights since the 2018-2019 soccer season.

Oswego State faces off against another SUNYAC opponent the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Saturday, October 8th at 1 PM at the Laker Turf Stadium.

Field Hockey battles in defensive matchup on the road

PITTSFORD, N.Y.  – The Lakers took a trip east to take on SUNYAC competitor St. John Fisher cardinals on Tuesday night in a tough 2-1 loss. The Cardinals started the night pushing a fast tempo against the Lakers, but Oswego played very sound defense in the first quarter not letting up any goals. Senior Goalkeeper Erica Scheblein shined while saving 4 shots on goal in the first quarter. In the start of the second quarter the Lakers finally got something going. About four minutes into the second quarter Kacie Simzer would score the only goal of the night for the Lakers at the 19:02 mark assisted by Nancy Pagliaroli. Oswego would control the the rest of the second quarter, testing the defense of St. John Fisher and they would go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

But Fisher didn’t take too much time to answer back. Just over two minutes in the 3rd Audrey Grieb would get the cardinals on the board with an unassisted goal. Not too long after that Cardinals received a penalty corner in the 35th minute that resulted in the go-ahead and eventually game-winning goal from Sam Choate. Oswego had plenty of chances with penalty corners, however, the Lakers were unable to take advantage  the Lakers would need to make something happen offensively in the 4th quarter to get back into the game. St John Fisher then took command of possession in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals landed six shots in the final quarter, with the Lakers only landing one shot in the final two minutes of regulation. Scheblein would finish with ten saves on the night and Simzer would score her team leading 12th goal on the season.

Oswego will now travel to Cortland on Saturday, October 8th for a SUNYAC matchup against the Red Dragons. Oswego will be looking to get their first SUNYAC win of the season, while the Dragons will be looking to remain undefeated at home.

Field hockey Loses in OT thriller

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Lakers faced their SUNYAC foe Oneonta Red Dragons in a defensive battle on Saturday afternoon. Both defenses dominated in the first half where neither team could get a shot on goal. Oswego could only get 3 shots altogether in the first half with 2 from Kaitlyn Mastracco and one coming from Molly Darcy. 

The second half started out the same with 3 minutes of no shots from both sides. That was until 3 minutes into the 3rd period sophomore Bryleigh Beauchat had her first shot blocked by Oneonta goalkeeper Jennifer Tumino, Beauchat was then able to get possession of the ball back off the save and knock it into the back of the goal for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 Lakers lead. The Dragons were able to get their first penalty corner of the game 2 minutes later and took advantage of it off the stick of Carly Waszczak who tied the game at one. The Lakers had a chance in the fourth to pull away from the Red Dragons but failed to capitalize off of three back to back penalty corners. After another strong defensive performance from both sides in the 4th the game moved on to overtime in a 1-1 tied battle.

The Red Dragons found a spark in the first overtime, getting five shots on goal. But Erica Scheblein was a force to be reckoned with on a day where she ended with a game leading 5 saves. The Lakers had a chance early into the first overtime with a penalty corner that missed just wide left from Mastracco and brought this game to a second overtime. The Red Dragons decided to continue their fast paced offense in the second overtime and they capitalized 3 minutes in off a goal by Morgan Fleming to win the contest 2-1.

The Lakers now move to 0-3 in SUNYAC play and 6-5 altogether on the season. Oswego will now travel east to St. John Fisher University on Tuesday October 4th for their next matchup.

Men’s soccer wins big over Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men’s soccer team took a trip north to take on SUNYAC foe, the Potsdam Bears. The team was looking to build off the non-conference win over Utica earlier in the week. The Lakers found momentum earlier, getting off four shots on goal in the first ten minutes, the last one finding the back of the net. Nikola Kovacevic put it past the goalie assisted by Caleb Munski. The offense slowed down the rest of the half, though they did get another three shots on goal throughout the remaining 35 minutes, nine shots in total in the half. Potsdam only had three shots in the half, one of them being on target.

The second half was where the Lakers took charge and never looked back. Kieran Gilroy scored not even a minute into the second frame, assisted by Ryan Contreras. The Bears were then given a red card thirty seconds later to bring them down to ten men. The second goal of the half would come not even a minute after the red card, Liam Rothar beating the goalie, assisted by Brendan Murphy. Kyle Gehrich  gave the Lakers their fourth goal, just five minutes after the third, this one assisted by Jason Wuytack. Just over a minute later Kilroy Gilroy scored his second of the game, this time assisted by Anastasios Diacovasilas. The Lakers goal onslaught took a twenty minute break, until David Cadet scored the sixth and final goal of the game, assisted by Jean Pierre Moquizilla. Oswego won 6-0 and kept their first shutout of the season, freshman Andre Bourjolly played most of the game in net, with Finnian Costello playing the final 13 minutes.

The Lakers now have a record of 4-5-1 (1-2-1 SUNYAC). Their next matchup is a Wednesday night matchup at home with SUNY Geneseo on October 5.

Oswego womens soccer continues to dominate with win over Potsdam

Emily_Apllegate_PassOSWEGO, N.Y.  –  It was another day at the office for the Lakers as they tool it to the Potsdam Bears from start to finish. The Lakers came out swinging early and did not take their foot off the gas the whole game. Freshman Briana Winkler put the Lakers on the board early as she has made a huge impact on the team in her first year as a Laker. From there it was a bit of a back and forth battle until the end of the half. The second half is where things picked up for the Lakers as Katie Delgrosso put the Lakers up 2-0. With five goals on the season already, Delgrosso has been on an absolute tear. Potsdam just couldn’t do anything to halt the Lakers momentum as Lexi Thompson scored the third and final goal of the game for the Lakers, putting the contest away. The Lakers outshot the Bears 17-6 putting on an offensive clinic. The Lakers look to keep the hot streak rolling as they travel to Geneseo to take on the nights in a SUNYAC matchup this Wednesday. Game starts at 4pm.

Field Hockey wins in big second half attack

OSWEGO N.Y-  The Oswego Field hockey team hosted the Utica Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers started the game dominating in time of possession over utica in the first 5 minutes. Oswego struck first off the stick of Kacie Simzer 14:37 into the contest which would be the only goal of the quarter leaving the score 1-0. To start the second period the Lakers held the momentum they had with multiple penalty corners and 4 shots at goal but couldn’t get anything to go. Utica turned their great defense into offense and at 18:47 Mackenzie Mix got the Pioneers on the board to tie the game. No one else could get anything to go and it stayed tied at 1-1 after 2 periods.

Oswego came out firing to start the 3rd with three shots in the first 1:36 and they got one to fall coming from senior Kaitlyn Jordan. Oswego was able to capitalize over a couple yellow cards by Utica and Jordan was able to score her second goal of the game to bring the Oswego lead to 3-1. Kacie Simzer then netted the 4th goal for the Lakers with 9th seconds left in the third for a 4-1 lead. The real story of the game was the defense by Oswego not allowing any shots on goal in the second half giving the Lakers a 4-1 win. The Lakers all together ended with 10 shots on goal and Erica Scheblein kept up her great season with two saves and only one goal allowed.

Oswego will be back home in a SUNYAC matchup against Oneonta on Saturday, October 1st at 4:00 PM.

Coach Kane earns 100th win as Oswego Men’s soccer gets back on track

OSWEGO, NY- The Oswego State Men’s Soccer team got back in the win column as they defeated the Utica Pioneers 2-1.

The game started with the Lakers and Pioneers getting into each other’s offensive zones, but were both unable to score as Oswego and Utica totaled eight shots during that time.  The Pioneers got on the board first as they scored at the 29:20 mark of the first half. Cody Baker-Green scored the only goal for the Pioneers, which was his seventh of the season.  The Lakers at the half were outshot by Utica 11-4.

Oswego pulled themselves together in the second half. Their first point of the game came off their first possession of the second half as Kyle Geinrich scored the Lakers opening goal of the game. Oswego put the pressure on Utica’s defense after their first goal of the game as they had five scoring chances but were unable to capitalize off them due to the Pioneers’ stout defense.

Freshman Jason Wuytack came up clutch for the Lakers as he scored the go-ahead game-winning goal for the Lakers at 85:56.  Goalie Andre Bourjolly had a strong game as he finished the game with six saves.  The Lakers were able to take advantage of the opportunities given to them as they only had three shots on goal for the whole entire game. Oswego led in most categories during the game including corner kicks with 13 compared to the Pioneers 3.  This was head coach Dan Kane’s 100th career win as the Lakers Men’s Soccer Coach.

Oswego will travel all the way north as they take on the Potsdam Bears for a conference matchup on Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 PM at Macy Turf Field.

Laker men’s soccer suffer first SUNYAC loss on the road

BROCKPORT, N.Y.  – The Laker men’s soccer took a trip to western New York to play their first SUNYAC matchup against the Brockport Golden Eagles on Wednesday. This game was back and forth right from the beginning stages of the contest when both teams shared possession in each teams offensive zone. Oswego took momentum starting at the 20-minute mark, firing three shots at Brockport goalie Andrew Taylor. But both teams couldn’t get anything to go in the first 45 minutes and the score was tied at 0-0 at half.

Oswego started with the momentum again in the second half but was then stopped when Russ Domm scored for Brockport at 51:24. Both teams started to become frustrated from not getting much going and the officials gave out three yellow cards in just 6:57 of play in the second half, two for Oswego and one for Brockport. Jean Pierre Moquillaza put a shot on goal in the 78th minute in hopes for a tying goal but Taylor made a great save keeping the lead for the Golden Eagles. The Lakers had one opportunity to tie with 16 seconds left on the clock but Taylor read Jason Wuytack shot well to clinch the win for Brockport. Kyle Gehnrich led the Lakers with three shots and Matt D’Arpino finished the contest with four saves in the net for Oswego. Oswego is now 2-4-1(0-1-1 SUNYAC)

The Lakers will come back home to take on SUNYAC opponent Cortland Red Dragons on Saturday, September 24 for at 1:00PM

Lakers Field Hockey shutout at home

OSWEGO N.Y- The Oswego Women’s Field Hockey team took on the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening and were shutout 2-0. Both goals happened early in the first quarter when Rochester’sAnya Arseneau scored directly 1 minute into game and almost 3 minutes later Maeve Fogarty scored the second and final goal of the game. The Lakers tried to play catch up for the rest of the game and in the second quarter Oswego put on the pressure putting multiple shots on goal and earning two penalty corners to finish the half.

The third quarter started with two yellow cards for the Lakers just five minutes in and the defense held the Yellow Jackets to nothing while fighting off the two and five minute penalties. But the Lakers couldn’t fight their way back as the Yellow Jackets got back into rhythm in the fourth quarter holding possession for the majority of it. Rochester ended the contest with a 19-4 shots advantage on the Lakers and also had 7 penalty corners to the Lakers 3. Scheblein finished the contest with 12 saves on 14 shots faced in the contest marking 27 saves in the last two contests for the Oswego senior goalkeeper.

Oswego will now head on the road for a SUNYAC matchup against the New Paltz Hawks. This game is set to start at 1:00PM on Saturday, September 24.

Oswego womens soccer coach Brian McGrane gets his 100th win at Laker Turf Stadium

OSWEGO, N.Y.  – The Lakers found success this past Saturday as they came out with a huge win against Clarkson, Giving Clarkson their first loss of the season. This was no easy game as the lakers had to fight hard throughout this close contest. The first half was almost all Oswego as Clarkson simply couldn’t get anything going on offense. Inching close to the end of the first half sophomore Jackie Marquardt capitalized on an assist from Briana Wrinkler to put the Lakers up 1-0.  The Lakers weren’t done there as Sara Marinaro scored another goal for the Lakers with Just three minutes left in the first half. Clarkson was able to rally in the second scoring a goal but couldn’t catch up due to the Lakers early lead. The team not only left with a huge win at Laker Turf, but Head coach Brian McGrane got his 100th career win as a result. The Lakers will open up SUNYAC play this Wednesday with a home game against Brockport. Catch it live on WTOP10 at 4:00pm.

Lakers field hockey suffer first loss on the road

CANTON, N.Y. –  The Lakers end their undefeated start with a 1-0 loss to the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday afternoon. Both teams had great defensive starts with no team budging in the first 20 minutes. After a quiet first quarter St. Lawrence finally had a breakthrough 23:07 in the second when forward Anna Coyne weaved her way through the lakers defense to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Oswego tried to fight back in the third quarter behind a 5-1 edge in shots, but St. Lawrence played great defense and dominated possesion in the 4th and the lakers could not break through. St. Lawrence dominated possession for most of the game with 19 shots on goal compared to the Lakers’ nine and dominated on penalty corners 14-2. Lakers goalie Erica Scheblein ended with a game leading 15 saves on the day.

The Lakers are now 5-1 and will next host the University of Rochester on the Laker Turf Field Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the program’s annual Teal Game.
